It is not just households that are going green – the Malta International Airport will have 435 PV panels installed at its premises, producing 165,000 units of electrical power.

The 100 kW project, which cost the airport €200,000, should save the company €30,000 yearly of its electricity costs, and will be installed on the roof over the check-in hall.

This, MIA said, will be the largest installation of its kind on the island and should start operating by November. It is expected to reduce the airport’s carbon footprint by about 145,000 kg CO2 a year.

Asked whether reflections off the panels could hinder pilots on their way in, an MIA spokesman said this would not be a problem as the glass was matt and did not reflect a lot of light.

The project is being partly financed by the European Regional Development Fund through Malta Enterprise with a contribution of 50 per cent. ElectrofixEnergy Ltd have been awarded the contract for the supply, installation and commissioning of the system.
