Ricardo Carvalho’s arrival from Chelsea may not be Real Madrid’s last bit of business this summer, according to general manager Jorge Valdano.
Carvalho completed a £6.7m move from Chelsea after passing a medical in the Spanish capital on Thursday.
The Portugal defender becomes the fifth summer signing for Real, who have also added Sami Khedira, Pedro Leon, Angel di Maria and Sergio Canales to their ranks as manager Jose Mourinho looks to wrestle the Spanish title from Barcelona in his first season in charge.
Real, who finished second in La Liga under former manager Manuel Pellegrini last season, have been linked with a move for Germany star Mesut Ozil while squad players like Lassana Diarra could move on thanks to this summer’s influx of players.
“We are comfortable with the team that we have, but the exits and arrivals might not be over,” Valdano said.
Valdano revealed that Mourinho is looking to add an attacking player to his squad before the transfer window shuts and while Ozil fits the bill perfectly, the Real general manager refused to confirm whether the Werder Bremen man was on Mourinho’s radar.
He added: “There could be new signings and the club is open to all different possibilities but I can’t name more possibilities in regards to who.”
Chelsea’s decision to sell Carvalho, 32, after six successful years at the club raised a few eyebrows given that he played a key role in the club’s title win last year.
The Portuguese revealed that he already had an agreement in place to leave the club after he agreed to stay last summer when Mourinho made a bid for the defender when he was in charge of previous club Inter.
He said: “Last year, when Inter wanted me, I said that last season would be my last in England. Chelsea agreed to that, and that’s why the transfer has been so easy.
“I had told them that I wanted to leave and have a go at playing in another country when I was 30 and 31 but they didn’t let me.”
Carvalho, who won three Premier League titles during his time at Stamford Bridge, will compete with Pepe, Raul Albiol and Ezequiel Garay for a place at the heart of the Madrid defence.
His arrival at the Bernabeu means he will be playing for compatriot Mourinho for the third time in his career after previous spells together at Chelsea and Portuguese side Porto.
“Mourinho and I have won many titles together and I hope to continue that run with this club. He has won titles wherever he has been,” he said.
