Four Italian students were this morning given suspended jail terms and fined €100 each after they admitted to skinny dipping in St George’s Bay, St Julian’s at around 3.30 a.m. this morning in St George’s Bay in St Julian’s.

Gennaro Origlietti, 20, Mario Coppola, 18, Giovanni d’Elena, 20 and Antonio Merola, 20, were in Malta on holiday.

Defense legal aid lawyer Joseph Ellis noted that many were commenting online about the police wasting their time arraigning these people. His clients were, however, very sorry for their actions.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella pointed out that such arraignments were intended to keep decency and decorum in the country.

Police Inspector Malcolm Bondin said that St George’s Bay was filled with around 1,000 people at the time of the crime and the police received a number of reports about this case with people feeling insulted by the men’s actions.

Police Superintendent Stephen Gatt said that when one visited Rome’s Trevi Fountain, one did not act irresponsibly.
