Marlene Pullicino’s reason for changing her mind on legislating for the possibility of divorce is interesting because it is so basic and because it took so long for her, a well educated legislator, to grasp it.
She states: “I realised that legislating for divorce does not mean I am going against my Catholic beliefs. By legislating, I am not telling people to go down a certain path. All I am doing is giving them the right to make their own decisions.”
I presume that because of her Catholic beliefs, she will never agree to turn the separation from her husband into a divorce but she now finally understands that that is no reason to deny the right to divorce to others who do not share her religious beliefs.
Unfortunately, Lawrence Gonzi still does not see the obvious (or feigns not to see it) because, with the PL in favour of divorce as well, passing Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando’s Private Member’s Bill now would make it a non issue at the next election. Or is that exactly why the PN does not want to resolve the matter now?
