Southampton owner Markus Liebherr has died at the age of 62. The cause of the German-born businessman’s death was not disclosed in a statement released by the club.

It read: “Anyone who came to know Markus learned of his quick wit, love of football – most especially Saints football – and his unquenchable thirst for better knowledge of all things. To say he will be missed is an unmistakable understatement.”

The Saints statement went on to promise that Liebherr’s dream of a Premier League return for the club would be achieved.

“The well laid plans for the club that he had mapped out over a year ago will continue to be implemented uninterrupted. The club will ensure that Markus’s wishes are carried out in full.”
