The new Libyan ambassador to Malta said today that no date has been fixed yet for Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to visit Malta, but the visit is still planned and he hoped it would take place as soon as possible.

Dr Saadun Ismail Suayeh presented his credentials as ambassador of Libya to President George Abela this morning, ending an unusual 18-month period during which Malta had no Libyan ambassador.

He described relations between the two countries as strong and excellent.

Libyan Foreign Minister Mousa Kousa announced Col Gaddafi's visit in January during a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Tonio Borg and although March had initially been mentioned no date was ever announced.
