Updated: De Marco's death shocks the nation

'There are few men who have had a more positive effect on the course of his nation's history' - US Ambassador

The passing away of Guido de Marco this afternoon shocked the nation, especially as the former President had been on the road to recovery after having been in intensive care at the end of last week.

Politicians and ordinary people saluted his memory as flags flew at half masts.

Statesments of condolence were issued by various constituted bodies including the GWU, the MUT and local councils.

US Ambassador Douglas Kmiec said Prof de Marco was a leader of great stature whose absence would be deeply felt.

"His tenure as President of the United Nations General Assembly, and his skill and perseverance in guiding Malta to EU membership are great tributes to his statesmanship.

"Guido de Marco's passing is as sad as it was sudden. Ever thoughtful and other-regarding, it was just like Dr. DeMarco to leave hospital care having put his nation's mind at ease that recovery was his.

"There are few men who have had a more positive effect on the course of his nation's history. And the sense of optimism he conveyed about his own health lives now in our memories for all who care for the well-being of democracy, human right and the hope for peace." (See video)
