I am hugely surprised at the mild surprise expressed by John Micallef, of Sliema, at the shocked tones adopted in The Times editorial about the government’s bland reaction to the plans by British Petroleum to drill for oil in the Gulf of Sirte (August 10). Mr Micallef said he did not recall a similar concern being expressed when Malta was doing its utmost to drill for oil in areas in the very centre of the Mediterranean.
Oil drilling has been taking place in the Mediterranean for many, many years, and it is amazing that the correspondent has not, it seems, grasped the reasons for the concern expressed by so many about BP’s plans.
