Let’s face it, the state of some of our beautiful islands’ pavements is absolutely disgusting, and this goes above and beyond paving.

It is evident that certain dog owners, with an indifference bordering on ignorance, leave it in the hands of their pets to embellish the pavement. As well as degrading the state of a street to little more than a public toilet, the stench in these areas is overwhelming – a walk down Cannel Street or St Paul’s Street (both in Sliema), or a trip to the beach at Tigné Seafront, opposite a certain five-star hotel, will give you the full picture of this terrible situation. It is even more ludicrous to see plastic bags full of dog excrement lining the pavements. “Collecting” usually implies disposing of it responsibly. I suggest offending owners reach for their dictionaries and look up the word “responsibility” – just to see that we are on the same page. And where, may I ask, are the authorities? Some organisations seem to prefer to turn a blind eye and let complaints fall on deaf ears, content with their empty threats.
