Eleven medicines, most of which treat cancer, have been added to the government formulary and will be handed out for free to patients.

The government said the medicines include Temozolomide, Pemetrexed, Erlotinib, Lenalidomide, Bortezomib, Sunitinib, Docetaxel and Apprepitant.

Another 21 medicines, which were only previously given to patients with specific conditions, will also be handed out on a larger scale as approved by the Government Formulary List Advisory Committee.

With a total 1,316 medicines now on the formulary, the pharmaceutical department last year handed out €22 million worth of medicines, 6.4 per cent more than in the previous year.
