Updated: Huge cruise ship anchors off Gozo

Adds picture - The Holland America cruise liner Noordam this morning became the largest cruise ship to stop off Gozo when it dropped anchor between Comino and Mgarr.
The 82,000-ton leviathan left Grand Harbour at 7.00 a.m. and sailed along Malta's East coast to Gozo, where it will be disembarking some 600 passengers for a tour lasting several hours.
This is the third Holland America Line cruise ship to call in Gozo after the Rotterdam and Prinsendam which called late last year. Mifsud Brothers Ltd. – Malta Cruise Services are handling the excursions in Gozo. Gollcher are the ship agents.
Tours have been designed to showcase the best that Gozo has to offer. These include a "Taste of Gozo" where guests have the opportunity to savour local wine and specially baked bread using a wood-burning fire together with an array of Gozitan specialities.
Families with children will be taken to Ramla il-Hamra and for the more adventurous a "Sail & Swim in the Blue Lagoon" in Comino as well as a "4x4 Safari".
There is also an "Art & Culture Tour" which takes guests to Ta' Dbiegi Crafts Center and to the workshop of a well known local sculptor. A spokesman said the buoy installed for cruise ships off Xlendi could not be used because it is meant for smaller ships.

I ask "would you be next to a Greek island and not visit?" .....so why not visit Gozo?"
I hope someone from the Gozo Tourism Authority or MTA would ask this puzzling question!

Only 600 out of some 3000 tourists on board. What is wrong.

@ tony gatt
Angelo Xuereb, before the last election mentioned your point.
We will have also a problem in Malta soon, unless something tangible is done.
True investment will be millions, but if we do not invest, we can say bye bye to this industry which is getting us quite a good amount of money back

What an impressive vessel. It truly dwarfed the Gozo Channel ferries!
Hope Gozo really benefited from its visit.

Just as a one off event but these large cruise liners could meet one day off the coast of Malta somewhere and maybe use it as a promotion for their cruises along the Mediterranean. Some nice areial video footage or photoshoots would then be used in their advertising campaigns !! Interesting to note the dark coloured hull of the Holland America cruise liners. The Holland America line is indeed one of the oldest serving passenger shipping lines in the world. It was very popular on the former emigration routes around the world.

"Families with children will be taken to Ramla il-Hamra.."
Has it been cleaned of all the stones and rocks?

I was amazed at the proximity to the shore of the bouy in xlendi. the idea of having a bouy is for the Ship not to cast anchor or stay on its bow trusters - but with such proximity cruisers will have no option but to keep their bow trusters and engines on . A waste of money in my opinion

This is what Gozo needs not the proposed Hondoq monster.
If a nature park (which is more sutiable for hondoq) with walkways, rock climbing etc was put instead in Hondoq the tourists from the cruise liner could visit this place as well.

Why did they not make use the expensive buoy at Xlendi?
it does look that this facility was a waste of taxpayer’s money!

Cause xlendi road is closed due to resurfacing!!!! I think that's the reason

You have to keep in mind that the ship was in Gozo in peak Summer season and handling 2000 passengers in Xlendi would have been almost impossible apart from the works being done in Xlendi. Boats disembarking passengers would have found it very difficult and unsafe to get in and out of the creek with the number of bathers there where.

Cause it s blushing and red facing that Xlendi is finally now being repaired... Repaired during peak summer season and after so many years of moon walking! Shitty government...

Well done O.F. Gollcher & Sons for all the hard work involved in bringing such a prestigious cruise liner to our shores. I am sure that the tourists onboard will love what our country has to offer.

A big thanks goes to Michela Serra who works like a dog to make it happen so perfectly. The organisation behind it all is a painstaking job which requires dedication and commitment. Thanks to the dedication of these people that tourism in Malta is improving year after year.

Thanks to Mifsud Brothers such initiative will boost Gozo as a destination credit for the said company bigger firms should follow suit

Someone obviously hasn't noticed that cruise ships are getting bigger!

just to let you know, smaller cruise ships do exist are still being made, these are more luxurious ships designed to be able to go into areas such as Xlendi where larger more mass market ships cannot enter!
