Din l-Art Ħelwa will be coordinating a project, sponsored by FimBank plc, to conserve Antonio Sciortino’s monument commemorating the Great Siege of 1565.

The project is planned to start this month and the intention is to have it concluded in time for the annual wreath-laying ceremony held on September 8.

The Heritage ResCo conservation team, composed of academically trained and experienced conservators Ingrid Ross, James Licari and Frank Chetcuti, have been entrusted with the cleaning and preventive maintenance of the Great Siege monument.

They are co-ordinating the works together with architect Claude Borg of the Restoration Project Office (Valletta Mdina Kottonera Rehabilitation Project), which falls under the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs.

The project is being dedicated to the memory of former curator of the National Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art Dennis Vella, who passed away last year.

Children aged between four and 14 from Fra Diego Home, Ħamrun, were recently given a one-day treat organised by Valletta Fund Management Ltd (VFM) and Valletta Fund Services Ltd (VFS).

The day kicked off at the Fun Park at Ta’ Qali, followed by a ride on Malta’s trackless train ‘Peprina’, and ended with lunch at Il-Veduta restaurant, Rabat.

VFM general manager Peter Perotti commented: “We wanted to show our support to the Franciscan sisters and helpers who give so much to promote the general welfare and social well being of the children entrusted in their care.

Above all we wanted to show the children there are people who care for them.”

VFS general manager Kenneth Farrugia added that the event was also an opportunity for all employees to meet in a social environment while doing charity work.
