Cathleen Cortis, B.A. English (Hons), second year.

“I appreciate the fact that the exam timetable is uploaded on the internet and updated frequently. Also, e-Sims, the online results system, is quite efficient; that is, when it’s available.

“I don’t like the fact that one can have up to three exams in one day.

“It is also inconvenient that exams of subjects taught by part-timers are held very late. I once had an exam which finished at eight in the evening.”

Mark Josef Rapa, Law with European Studies, first year.

“I like the fact that exams are a fixed period of time through which you can evaluate what you have learnt throughout the year.

“However, I dislike having to cram information during the nights prior to the exams. Students are too overloaded with work; they feel that too much is expected of them, and deadlines never seem to be met.

“A uniform system of periodical assessments would be ideal, possibly coupled with practice, job shadowing, and first-hand experience.”

Luke Zammit, Medicine and surgery, second year.

“There is nothing I like about the exam system at University. I don’t like the fact that students are assessed based on the couple of hours they spend in the exam hall. Anything can happen during those few hours. A year of hard work would have been wasted if a student is unlucky enough to feel sick during the exam, for example.

“My suggestion is that tests be held at intervals throughout the year. These could then be used to give each student an assessment mark, which would make up say 65 per cent of the global mark.

“The exam should hold not more than 35 per cent of the global mark. This way, students would have to work hard throughout the whole year (rather than cramming in the last month or so). Students would be rewarded for work they have done during the year and the stress created during exam periods would diminish.”
