Prime Minister to visit Libya this evening
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi will be going to Libya this evening at the invitation of Palm City.
This will be Dr Gonzi’s second visit to Libya in less than two months. He will be accompanied by his wife Kate.
Dr Gonzi was in Libya last June when an agreement had been reached between the Swiss and Libyan governments, bringing to an end a long standing diplomatic row.
Malta had been one of the countries instrumental in bringing the agreement to fruition.
Dr Gonzi’s visit to Libya comes less than a week after a visit by Opposition leader Joseph Muscat, during which Dr Muscat had a meeting with Libyan leader Muammar Ghaddafi.
Before his return to Malta tomorrow, Dr Gonzi will attend Mass with the Maltese community in Tripoli at St Francis Church in Dahra, Tripoli.

@ J Farrugia.
Mintoff knew what he wanted, he was the most assertive politician we ever had. He was strong willed and an achiever, hard as nails. These were the strengths that gave him the appearance of a dictator. Gonzi is OK if you want a smiling face with a chronic problem to take a decision. No Joe, I don’t hate Gonzi, I just don’t like his politics.

Tghid kumbinazzjoni li Dr Gonzi sejjer il Libya fil lejl li qed jigi organizzat l 'August Moon Ball', li hija attivita organnizata mil presidenza biex jingabru l flus ghal Community Chest Fund?
Fuq kollox din iz zjara mhux qed issir wara xi talba mit tmexxija tal pajjiz.
Immaginaw li kieku kien Joseph Muscat.
Nistaw nghidu li Gonzi jippreferi jmur jiehu l kuskus minflok jattendi attivita presidenzjali? Bhal ma ghamlu storja kbira li Joseph Muscat jippreferi jiehu xi burger milli jattendi cerimonja ufficjali?

@ Jesmond Abela.
The sad ending of Mintoff’s political career is not very different from that of George Borg-Olivier. Both leaders were ill-treated by their own party when they called it a day. Mintoff stepped down voluntarily and started his own destructive crusade in 1996 which culminated in 1998 when he toppled the Labour Government. Mintoff’s act received mixed feelings amongst the Labour supporters. George Borg-Olivier’s story had a sadder ending; he was unceremoniously removed by people who he trusted. But that is not my point. My point is that irrespective of their faults we must agree that all our former politicians had the country’s interest at heart and the rest was politics. My inclination is to oppose them when you don’t agree with them but once they retire they deserve everybody’s respect. Nobody is perfect.

When will we grow up, all this fuss about the BPdeal in Libja by all of us
It's true it's very worrying but let's be serious, can a small country such as Malta do anything about it except from expressing our concern with Libya that safety measures will be taken, can Malta really stop Libya from drilling.

@Charles J Butiggieg, bir rispett kollu lejn kulhadd pero listorja ta lahhar jumejn tal Profs De Marco kienet hafna aktar importanti minn gheluq snin il perit. Qabel tara l-problema kbira tan nazzjonalisti, ahjar tara il problemi ENORMI tal partit laburista. Forsi insejt li l-partit ta l-istess MINTOFF kien warrbu w sahansitra ghajjur traditur. Forsi insejt li ex mexxej laburista li int sejjahtlu "statesman" kien imcahhad li jidhol fil kwartieri tal partit laburista. Insejt kemm kien hemm kliem dispreggjativ fil konfront tieghu. Tista tghidilna kemm il darba fil website laburista gie imfakkar gheluq snin il perit? Kemm ninsew malajr fejn irridu w ghal konvinjenza taghna. “Before his return to Malta tomorrow, Dr Gonzi will attend Mass with the Maltese community in Tripoli at St Francis Church in Dahra, Tripoli.” What is the news value of this? We all know that he’s a frequent church goer. It would make news if he takes Gaddafi and his wives with him to church.

il-mibgheda li ghandek ghall-PM tieghek u tieghi hija kbira. L-unika konsolazzjoni li ghandhu jkollok hi li GONZIPN mhux id-dittatur li kellna jmexxi Malta bil-vjolenza u l-attakki fuq il-partitarji nazzjonalisti. Almenu huma mexxejja demokratici.

The most important thing for Malta is when are we going to start drilling for oil,for that is the only financial solution for Malta.

Cannot you people realise that Dennis Catania's comment is tongue in cheek. He is having a jibe at the UNHCR and the Jesuit Refugee Service who have been screaming blue murder at the return of illegal immigrants to Libya on the grounds that Libya is not a safe country. According to these organisations who represent nobody except themselves, all illegal immigrants should be brought to Malta so that they can file claims for asylum here. Geddit?
I mean, even Dr Gonzi will be attending Catholic mass in Tripoli, so there is no reason to believe that there is any persecution on the basis of religion in Libya.

Speaking of Libya, yesterday Dom Mintoff had his 94th birthday and not a single mention on this site. Thanks for "all" the information you want us to know!
We even know that the Prime MInister is going to go to Libya with Kate and then no wishes for a Man who made Malta's history!!! Shame!!

Michael, il problema kbira tan Nazzjonalisti hija li ma jiddistigwixxux bejn Statesman u politku attiv. The Labour lot are different. Have a look at Guido De Marco's news item and you would see an enormous amount of Labour well wishers in spite of the huge political differences.
I very rarely agreed with De Marco yet I always admired his staying power and his strong will. Yes ,I LOVE THE MAN AND WISH HIM GOOD HEALTH AND A LONGER LIFE. Very sad to see anybody demonstrating so much hate for our former politicians.

Mr. Denis Catania
Libya is much much safer than the USA. At least in Libya you do not hear that a woman is either killed or raped every 45minutes as it's the case in the USA. And by the way Libya never dropped a nuclear bombs that killed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians.
Denis Catania
Aug 8th 2010, 05:59
Martin Cassar I never said Libya was unsafe. You didn't get my point. It's Malta's NGO's that give Libya a bad name on behalf of illegal immigrants. I hope you will protect Libya the next time an NGO from Malta calls Libya unsafe.

Have you ever visited Libya?
The libyans were also accused of the PAN AM aircraft downing over Lockerbie - which was never the case.

@ Mr. Dennis Catania.
Libya is much more safe than Malta sometimes and if you have never been there give it a try.
@ Mr.A.Abela
They are never going to end especially with Libya since it employs a lot of Maltese and have strong financial relations.Seems like you don`t even know what you are talking about because you listen only to the media and have never been there.

C Taliana do you remember the illegal immigrants saying that women get raped in Libya?
"Dr Gonzi will attend Mass with the Maltese community in Tripoli at St Francis Church in Dahra, Tripoli"
This visit and attending for the Sunday mass which I did several times and still do whenever 'Im over there not only puts an end to their lies but also confirms that they also lie about being in danger in Libya because they are Christians. Everything the illegal immigrants say is a whole big lie stretching from here to Timbuctoo which by the way is situated in today's Mali.
