A man who allegedly stole more than €2,300 from a mechanic in Mosta on Monday was granted bail yesterday after he denied the charge.
Nigerian national Michael Ajibode, 37, who resides in St Paul’s Bay, told the court he had a stable job with the electronics manufacturer Methode and was currently going through annulment proceedings with his Maltese wife.
Police Inspector Edmond Cuschieri said he objected to bail as there were still witnesses to be heard and the victim had been approached by a third party regarding the incident.
Legal aid lawyer Anthony Cutajar said his client had a stable job and asked Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera to take this into consideration.
The magistrate granted Mr Ajibode bail against a personal guarantee of €10,000 and also placed him under house arrest.
She warned him that if he was to be found breaching the conditions and failed to pay the sum, he could risk years in jail as it would be converted into a prison term at €11.65 per day.
