Operator of illegal abattoir to be charged with animal cruelty
Video: Alan Adami
A man is expected to be charged with animal cruelty and breaching food safety regulations after animal welfare officials discovered he was using the back rooms of his garage as an illegal abattoir.
The Animal Welfare Department were alerted to the situation with an anonymous complaint about illegal activities concerning animals at the garage, in Triq il-Bajjada, Qormi.
They visited the place this morning and found that the garage, was used by Gianni Bajada, whose son worked at the slaughter house, as a mechanic and carpentry workshop.
However, its back rooms were being used as an illegal abattoir.
The animal welfare officials, who were accompanied by the police, found pig heads in small tanks, intestines, freezers packed with animal parts, and live sheep, some of which were untagged.
A tag is issued by veterinarians to certify that an animal is fit for consumption.

Well done to the Department of Animal Welfare. I hope this Mr. Bajada and those who took these poor animals to him are fined extremely heavy fines and given to the Animal Welfare Department. As well as not being allowed near animals again. I do not know what is in the news clip as I am too scared to watch it in case there are murdered animals in it.

Well Done AWD! However, will the operator be given a slight tap on the wrist and told not to be a naughty boy for the next six months and then go on with the cruelty for another number of years in some forsaken hell-hole? When are animal welfare laws going to be given some serious consideration in this country? On another note while we 're talking about animal cruelty: when is the torture of rabbits, writhing in agony on the floor for many minutes, before being skinned for food on some barbeque, going to become illegal? Does that not constitute animal cruelty?

Whats the message here, how wrong it is to run a slaughter house illegally, or how wrong it is to slaughter animals?

Good Work by the inspectorate. I would suggest that all meat and food outlets be surprised inspected for any illegality of meat and other items which are not labelled. Hefty fines are to be applied to stop breachers.

well done; i understand the animals found alive cannot be consumed; instead of put to sleep can't they be donated to Razzett tal-hbiberija where they can live and be enjoyed.

The creation of this Animal Welfare Department was one of the best things to have happened in the recent past. I hope it will be supported and that it will grow in size and manpower.
Now please, put the people involved with these cruelties in prison for a lengthy term and fine them a huge sum, so they'll serve as a warning.

Mr. Caruana
One can presume. Have you ever been to those places, oriental cuisine or otherwise where a buffet, all you can eat, sounds unrealistically priced?
Thank God for a very acidic stomach God gave you.
