Works planned on 448 roads in 47 localities

Works on 448 roads in 47 localities are to be carried out in the next 12 months at a cost of €13.5 million.

Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said said the works will involve the government, local councils and the private sector.

Speaking during a visit to Mqabba, where 29 roads have been included in the plans, Dr Said said works on 202 roads in 26 localities will be carried out in partnership between the government, the councils and the private sector. The works were estimated to cost €7 million, a substantial amount of which will be forked out by the government.

61 roads in three localities would be built by the councils and paid for by the government in a pilot project at Mqabba, Swieqi and Kirkop.

A further 185 roads in 33 localities would be built by the councils and paid for from a government allocation to the councils. Dr Said said that the government would this year be allocating funds to each council, amounting to €5.2 million, to be spent for this purpose. This was equivalent to 17 per cent of the direct financial allocations councils received this year.

The list of roads where works are to be carried out can be seen in the pdf link below.

Further to what has been already said, I would like to point out that Mosta is one of the largest localities (both area and population wise), apart from being also a main artery for those gong from north to south and vice-versa.
So can somebody explain how only five roads are deemed to have the attention of both local and central governments.
Triq il Fortizza, for one, has become a principal arterial road and unfortunately it will become more so once the new Public Transport Company starts operating, the rason for this is that a major shareholder has his newly built administration offices in this road.
Can somebody help us poor citizens who have to carry all the burden.
Thank you.

Same as Triq is-Settembrina Ghaxaq... in the 2006-2008 list, but up till now nothing but dust and stupid excuses! But now it's not even on the 2010 list! Hope is fading!

If you want to shake a rotten tooth out of your head, try driving down that road in a leaf-sprung Land Rover at 40mph! We'll beat the head-shaped dents out of the roof later!

Very well said. We need the main roads done, those which are used DAILY and by ALL those who live in Zabbar/Xghajra/M'Scala/Cottonera area. The main roads mentioned by Mr Vassallo are a total disaster, if they can even by called roads!!

Its true Zabbar is forgotten and what about Marsaxlokk. The pavement in Xatt is-Sajjieda is not enough for the residents in tas-Silg Area. The pavement was done to accommodate better the restaurants

Mr Mizzi you are 100% correct. When the bypass was opened a couple of months ago they also did Triq l-Gharix and Triq Is-Silla which has been waiting for the last 38 years for a lick of tarmac. And they really got just a lick because I was talking to a friend of mine who showed me both streets that they have only been given less than an inch thickness of tarmac which is already breaking down let alone when the rainy season comes. Triq is-Silla had also been already dug up twice to give water service to a new resident but it was only repaired by the usual spadeful of spalls and some tar. Can the Local Council look into the matter because the contractor should not be paid for such disgraceful shoddy work and both streets should be rebuilt at the contractors expense.

This list does not include p/o Triq San Martin in Zurrieq. This part of the road was never asphalted and there are 100% of the facades which are ready. And yet, this road was already listed in a previous list published by the government - 'Bini ta` Toroq Residenzjali 2006-2008'
I really doubt very much what value have this 'new' promise!

I cannot beleive how Mosta is so abondoned. Please change the name of Sta Margherita estate to Baghdad during the War.
Now after all the Bombs Baghdad is rebuilt again.

Our locality is all ready done with all th services on both sids of the road. Only needs resureface wit some Tarmac.
