Works planned on 448 roads in 47 localities
Works on 448 roads in 47 localities are to be carried out in the next 12 months at a cost of €13.5 million.
Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said said the works will involve the government, local councils and the private sector.
Speaking during a visit to Mqabba, where 29 roads have been included in the plans, Dr Said said works on 202 roads in 26 localities will be carried out in partnership between the government, the councils and the private sector. The works were estimated to cost €7 million, a substantial amount of which will be forked out by the government.
61 roads in three localities would be built by the councils and paid for by the government in a pilot project at Mqabba, Swieqi and Kirkop.
A further 185 roads in 33 localities would be built by the councils and paid for from a government allocation to the councils. Dr Said said that the government would this year be allocating funds to each council, amounting to €5.2 million, to be spent for this purpose. This was equivalent to 17 per cent of the direct financial allocations councils received this year.
The list of roads where works are to be carried out can be seen in the pdf link below.

I have been living for 24 years in Fra Luca Zurki Street Żurrieq. Various times we were told that it was going to be done but it is still the same as it was when I came to live here. In summer we suffer from dust and in winter we suffer from mud and puddles of water. Really disappointed that this is road is not included considering that other roads in the list are much better than our road. It is a shame that we are in the EU and we still live in these conditions.

I would like to bring the attention of the authorities that Dawret it-Tunnara, Mellieha, a road along the seaside, is in a terrible state. We the poeple living there in summer had made a petition giving it to the Mayor of Mellieha, but as I looked at the list of places where roads will be made, I was shocked not to see Mellieha in it.
I am always ashamed of all the tourists that pass from this road in summer and winter! Please take care of it since it is a road where a lot of people pass by and it does not give such a good impression of our country!

with regards to the list of streets of Mosta supplied by Mr Michael Scicluna one must include College Street and EB Vella Street. These two roads together with Rimona Street have been been completely negleted - only with some patching being done - for decades. It is really a shame on the civil authorities - no more voting on my part - kompletament minsija.

Mosta these are the 5 roads listed, Triq il-Wied, Triq l-Antinni, Triq l-Istrinġell, Triq Dun Ġwann Pulliċino, Triq ir-Rimona. Does anyone go round the roundabout between Triq il-Kungress Eukaristiku and Triq il-Belt were there is the war memorial. I use it four to six times a week and it is like riding off road. Any one out there with any concern please send this message on. Thank you Have a nice weekend, and Keep Malta Tidy.

Further to what has been already said, I would like to point out that Mosta is one of the largest localities (both area and population wise), apart from being also a main artery for those gong from north to south and vice-versa.
So can somebody explain how only five roads are deemed to have the attention of both local and central governments.
Triq il Fortizza, for one, has become a principal arterial road and unfortunately it will become more so once the new Public Transport Company starts operating, the rason for this is that a major shareholder has his newly built administration offices in this road.
Can somebody help us poor citizens who have to carry all the burden.
Thank you.

We have been living at Triq il-Hannewija, Naxxar for the past twenty years. It has never been built or surfaced. It is a veritable dust bowl in summer and a muddy lake in winter. We have pleaded with the various Government administrations since 1987 to build the road, but despite promises, the cart track that serves as our street is still in the same condition it was twenty years ago. Triq il-Hannewija, again, is not in the Naxxar list of roads to be done, while all the nearby surfaced streets are listed. What is going on?

I don't know why all this news and fuss just because the government is going to re-surface a list of roads, it has been in the head lines for the past couple of days it's as if the government is going to do something very special when in actual facts decent road works are basics in a supposedly modern country.
Needless to say, this list is nothing compared to the dire situation of most roads in Malta, I guess it doesn't even cover 50% of all the roads that require immediate attention. Even though we have been member state of the EU for quite some time now, our roads when compared to other European State members are most probably the worst ever.
Overall the roads situation has improved but there is still so much to be done before I start congratulating the government for the road works, so save the propaganda and get along with it dear Government!

If the authorities are going to take the same time to complete a road as they are doing in finishing a bus shelter started some two months ago at the top of main street Mellieha It would take another four years to finish them. It is a disgrace but how can the authorities explain why a simple bus shelter ( one of these modern glass oneswhich by the way is not good to shelter in during the hot sunny summer days because of its glass or plastic material and too open for a windy cold day in winter especially at this open spot in Mellieha) has taken so long to be completed. : Two week for the small concrete platform, and then two week for every sideand todate it is still without the third side. What a disgrace. What a laisser faire attitude. By the way it reflects how our country is governed: by amateurs, parttimers and people who believe that this country is their back yard having been left to them by their ancestors. The word shame is not enough the word sh--- is more appropriate.

The majority of people complaining here are probably those same people who have been saying comments like "B'Malta fl-EU pajjizna sar tal-barranin u mhux tal-Maltin". I suggest to all those people to re-consider their opinion since we should thank the EU for the funds and of course our government who uses the funds well to build our roads.
It is true that some roads have been left in disaster for a long time but at least they are being done and most of all they are done well, unlike the roads that used to be done in the early 1980s when a quick thin layer of asphalt used to be done if you were lucky to live in a road that used to have that luxury! At that time we used to be taken for a ride a few months prior to an election. At this point, the election is still far away and no we are not going to have an election prior to the scheduled time OK.

Works on 448 roads in 47 localities are to be carried out in the next 12 months .. This is quite misleading. The greater number of the 'ROADS' mentioned are short streets and even allies.
Anyway 448 in 12 months, that is 37 per month. If they were really Roads, I guss that it would have been a world record.

Is the Armier Road included it is like driving on a cobble stone surface, imagine the impression the thousands of students from schools of English that visit this place every week, and us poor tax payers who go to Armier to relax. Want to test your car's suspension try it on Armier Road. Thank you Hon Chris Said What a shame Armier Road not listed in fact not one centimeter of tarmac in all Mellieha. Armier could easly be named for a Blue Flag Beach. Thank you for all your efforts hopes they succeed. Euro 13.5m works out on average of Euro 43.00 per registered vehicle.

Any and all roads to be done is good news. However I really do hope that by sharing the work out in the proposed manner, standards do not drop drains and manholes are checked and alligned properly with the road and do not just sink after a few weeks and therefore money gets wasted.
Looking at the photo above, this looks there has not be an initial layer of spray tar - yes, thats the stuff that makes things stick together and prevents holes appearing in quick time. Quality inspectors need to be on hand all the time to prevent contractors cutting corners/costs when no one is looking.

What is the Italian Military Mission doing these days? It used to help in road building in the past. Is it true that it had some agreements with the Maltese government to maintain some of the roads it constructed? Are the terms of these agreements being implemented?
Some towns and villages are more equal than others, or perhaps they were forgotten for some time. St. Paul’s Bay wins a total of 57 streets? What happened to Sliema and Rabat? Do they have silk roads?
Sarah Ciappara
Aug 4th 2010, 16:52
Us property owners pay for the road contribution and in 2010 we do expect that “reasonable” time passes for roads to be constructed.
Triq il-Quccata in Marsascala, a 200m street, has been in a Somali-like state for over 6 years, and we can’t open a window in summer due to the constant dust. When it rains in winter we have to climb on the 60 cm pavement to get to our places, to avoid the “St. Christopher’s act”. This disgrace continues with the constant mud, damage to our cars and not even being able to walk a baby stroller or child without the risk of injury. Of course this is the tale of many angered residents all over the country.
“Prosit” for the list of roads to be resurfaced BUT should I hope that we are delivered from our misery in another 6 years time and some 2000 roads to be done before we can have the basic dignity of living on a constructed street in an EU country.
MEPA you are expected to deliver proper services to your customers - the paying Maltese citizens. So clean up your act and deliver by at least giving us our streets asap.

Its a great shame and a disgrace that Triq il-Kunsill tal-Ewropa and Labour road are not even mentioned. Anyone able to pass through these two roads and not feel sea-sick is guarantee that he will never be seasick even in the worst storm at sea. Have a look at Google Earth and you can even see the disaster of these roads. Triq il-Kuncizzjoni and triq Ganni Bonavia are just two small bits of road as are others mention in the proposed plan. The same applies to Triq Mons Catania which is just a small bit of road in the Housing Estate. Same applies to Triq ic-Cawsli. A couple of small alleys like Sqaq Berqi, Sqaq Sidtna tal-Mirakli, Triq il-Grazzja (u erba' sqaqien) again very small a couple of feet wide, while some of the roads mentioned are not that bad while others in the same locality are a disaster. Who is the Government trying to fool? Maybe outsiders not knowing Zabbar will be fooled into thinking that a lot of roads are going to be rebuilt, but they cannot fool those living in Zabbar. See the roads on google earth and don't be fooled.
James Mizzi
Aug 4th 2010, 18:45
Very well said. We need the main roads done, those which are used DAILY and by ALL those who live in Zabbar/Xghajra/M'Scala/Cottonera area. The main roads mentioned by Mr Vassallo are a total disaster, if they can even by called roads!!
Joanna Saliba
Aug 5th 2010, 08:04
Its true Zabbar is forgotten and what about Marsaxlokk. The pavement in Xatt is-Sajjieda is not enough for the residents in tas-Silg Area. The pavement was done to accommodate better the restaurants
John Vassallo
Aug 5th 2010, 11:00
Mr Mizzi you are 100% correct. When the bypass was opened a couple of months ago they also did Triq l-Gharix and Triq Is-Silla which has been waiting for the last 38 years for a lick of tarmac. And they really got just a lick because I was talking to a friend of mine who showed me both streets that they have only been given less than an inch thickness of tarmac which is already breaking down let alone when the rainy season comes. Triq is-Silla had also been already dug up twice to give water service to a new resident but it was only repaired by the usual spadeful of spalls and some tar. Can the Local Council look into the matter because the contractor should not be paid for such disgraceful shoddy work and both streets should be rebuilt at the contractors expense.

I have noted that Lapsi Street St. Julians is on the list of road works. It may be a good idea to take into consideration placing culverts with grails so that when it rains in winter the tonnes of water that comes down the road from Ta' Giorni can be saved rather than being wasted by eventually going down theroad to the sea. It would also make the road more accessible because during heavy rains pedestrians can hardly used the road without getting soaked. The St. Julians Local Council could try and find a solution regarding Main Street. I appreciate that a notice has been fixed advising motorists to slow down as it is a 'Village Core' - most motorists unfortunately ignore this notice. The road has practically become a motorway with such a large volume of cars using it. There is no pavement for pedestrians and we have to squeeze in between the cars to get out of the road when cars go by. Also at some part of the road, cars are being parked on both sides of the road. The road is narrow enough as it is without having cars parked on both sides.

And how many times have we read similar statements in the recent years? Who are you kidding dear government. I live in Balzan and most of the roads are a mess and have been like that for years on end. Balzan Valley - for example. Our non-existent council doesn't seem to bother much, unfortunately. Who will?
