One way to filter these kind of people is to ask for proof of monetary support and place of residence for the duration of the stay in Malta. Even though there is free movement of people in the EU, the police can still veto certian people when financial support is not there. The way things are shaping up, Malta will be having another illigal migrant mob, gypsies. These ones will integrate very well with the locals but are very good at what they do, which is not good news.

Whats with these Romanians? First we read of them stealing from peoples pockets at MC Donald s and Burger King, now this shoplifting. Is it a gypsy thing? Maybe we ought to keep an eye on these folk, not black immigrants.

7000 Euros is a lot of money! and all they got was a slap on the wrist surely if they weren't caught they would have continued their shopping spree. Oh well so much for justice...

Many worry about the Africans living here when the ones they should worry about are the eastern europeans, Bulgarians, Romanians etc; I live is St. paul's Bay and in our area there are many Africans and also a good number of Easterns but my worries are about the latter; while I consider most of the Africans living close by as helpful and friendly, not the same I can say about the easterns that stare at us with a kind of look that makes me and my family suspect that they are up to something; on the contrary we got used to the africans and some even integrate with us in our local bar;

Whatever happened to the good old Maltese 'T-Leafs', these days all you read in the law courts press releases involves mainly east Europeans, Romanians, Bulgarians etc, etc..!.

Suspended sentence means that they will come again and try their luck. No wonder all Roma are being expelled from France and other countries.

The magistrate should have considered how these three thieves will live, before the suspended sentence was given:will they go again to the valletta waterfront,no doubt,to steal or scrounge free meals?
It should be a european union law that any EU citizen breaking the law in another country of the EU can be deported to his home country. It would put a cap on the great amount of romanians, gypsies, etc who are committing grave crimes of rape, robbery, and murder in other countries in the EU.
This is what our MEPs should be shouting about in the EU,besides immigration!

Could not agree more!!
These Eastern Europeans seem to come to Malta mainly for that. We already had some others this week with card Fraud!
I agree...they should be deported immediately!

I don,t think they went there for a meal .Most probably they were caught trying to get to the catamaran to return to Sicily.

I agree. Id rather have 10 Somalis willing to work and integrate in our country rather then 10 Roma with such mentality. On the other hand not all Romanians are Roma.

The magistrate should not have suspended their prison sentence. They are now free to roam around freely in other EU States without hindrance.
The EU is a border free union of member states which gives total freedom of movement to its citizens, therefore, deportation may only be effected on non EU Citizens.

@ Charles J Buttigieg
They got a suspended sentence because they have a clean conduct record with the local police. Back home they probably have a rap sheet that goes round the block.
They should now sue the government for breaching their human rights by preventing them from earing a living practising their profession.

Charles J. Buttigieg wrong. They could still be deported on the basis of national security.

@ Joe Zammit
Tell us how you can deport a national then. You were probably thinking of exile – but aren’t we civilised enough for that? I suggest you stick to your divorce debates, more entertaining for this audience.

@ Muscat
please stop talking nonsense and accusing the romanians that in their majority they are thiefs, rapers and so on. These are Roma gypsies with romanian nationality. AND THIS MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE. I can assure you that the vast majority of Romanians and hard- working, relieable people. So please stop being racist and think about what you write before you write it...............
