A woman recounted how her former boyfriend had punched her between the eyes during an argument on Saturday, as he stood across the court room yesterday charged with seriously injuring her.

The couple are not being named to protect their identity and that of their five-year-old daughter. During submissions on bail, defence lawyer Jose Herrera told the court that his client, who pleaded not guilty, was living alone at the house they had once shared because his former girlfriend had left to live with her mother.

Since the extents of the injuries were unknown, the woman was asked to enter the court room and stood near the prosecution to testify.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit asked her how she was injured and she replied, using her left hand to imitate her former boyfriend’s punch. As she spoke, a cut on her nose and bruising near her eyes were visible. Trying to down play the injuries during submissions on bail, Dr Herrera said that it was not a nice thing for someone to punch their girlfriend, however, she was not in hospital.

The Magistrate granted the accused bail against a personal guarantee of €10,000 and ordered him not to speak to the woman, at the risk of losing €500 if he does.
