Barman helps himself to €10,000
Paceville barman would avoid punching in drinks, then pocket the difference
A barman at Bar Native in Paceville admitted in court today that he stole more than €10,000 in cash from the till over a period of six months while two accomplices admitted being part of the scheme and stealing an additional €2,000.
Police sources said that the barman, a 24-year-old from Sliema, used to punch-in the cash register fewer drinks than he was paid for, and pocketed the difference.
Accomplices Valerie Camilleri, 29 of Luqa and Danats Smons, 21 who is from Latvia, admitted being involved in the scheme and receiving between €2,000 and €3,000 from the barman.
George Cutajar, parte civile lawyer, said with regards to the accomplices that he would be satisfied with a conditional discharge as Danats Smoms had been instrumental in revealing the scheme.
Dr Joe Giglio, defence counsel for the barman, said his client had already paid back €1,500 and the difference would be returned by December.
Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona conditionally discharged the accomplices for a year and warned them that they were obliged to pay the money back.
He put off sentencing for the barman to December 6.
