The teachers’ union has declared an industrial dispute with Church schools after St Joseph Secondary School in Sliema refused to grant leave to a teacher who needed it for family reasons.

The Malta Union of Teachers said it had asked the Curia to review the issue, insisting that this refusal went against a collective agreement signed by both parties. It described the decision by the head of school as discriminatory and abusive.

“MUT has written to the Church authorities several times but to date has not received a reply despite this issue dragging on for several months,” said the union.

“Therefore, the MUT was left with no choice but to declare industrial action and reserve its legal rights to safeguard the rights of its members.”
