Mosta church parvis revamped
The Resources Ministry is finishing off rehabilitation works on the parvis of Mosta Church.
The €200,000 project has centered on the rebuilding of the parvis wall and railings according to original designs made in 1860 by architect Giorgio Grognet de Vasse, who designed the church.
Two baroque granite fountains are also being installed on either side of the main parvis entrance. Architect Grognet had himself indicated in his plans that he intended to have fountains near the entrance of the church.
The Mosta church authorities allocated €80,000 for the work in Maltese stone.

i agreed with Micallef not Dimech
it traffic johrog mit triq li bhalissa tidhol ghal mosta
hemm hafna nies li jixtiequha hekk... pero jidher li hemm xi awtoritajiet li ma jridux li din isehh!
proposti kien hemm... u hafna hwienet jixtiequha hekk.

@ Cris Grech, Thobba lil Mosta u lil Mostin biex trid taqleb is-sistema ta'kif jidhol it-traffiku fil-Mosta. Taf li ilha xi 14 il-sena jew aktar kif inhi? Taf kemm zdied it-traffiku f'Malta dan iz-zmien kollu? Kieku kella tinqaleb kif tohlom inti u shabek, minn fejn ser johrog it-traffiku ? Mhux mit- Triq il-Kbira lejn in-Naxxar ! Ma' tafx li din telgha u aktar exhaust u tniggis tal-arja fil-Mosta ? Hallu kolox kif inhu ghax issa indrat u tkomplux tisservew bir-Rotunda u b'tal-hwienet ghax dan tal-ahhar hafna minnhom ma joghqodux il- Mosta wara li jghalqu l-hanut w u tniggis u l-mard li jgib mieghu ma'jaffetwawhomx.

The parvis is now complete and it's a monumental beauty, well deserved by the colossal Rotunda in Mosta. Prosit to all those involved especially the workers who performed an excellent job.

Prosit tassew tal-progett taz-zuntier. Fl-ahhar il-Knisja tal-Mosta rega' ghandha iz-zuntier li jixirqilha! Pero' huwa ferm redikolu li it-triq li suppost tidhol lejn il-Knisja tal-Mosta hija triq li tohrog minnha! Ejjew nikkomplimentawha billi ndawwru r-rotta ta' din it-triq Il-Kungress Ewkaristiku u ssir id-dhul lejn il-Mosta li taghti ghal dan it-Tempju Majjestuz. Dan sens komun li mhux komuni!
S.Dimech
Aug 4th 2010, 11:31
Il-problema hi, li s-sens komun jgħidlek ukoll li trid taħseb fil-bqija tat-traffic u kif se jgħaddi, kif se joħroġ mill-pjazza eżempju. Barra min hekk trid tara li ma titlifx postijiet ta'parking! Mhux la taqbad tghid sieħbi...
Mill-bqija, xogħol mill-isbaħ. Iġri naraw dawk l-istatwi tal-bronż f'posthom fuq iz-zuntier issa.

Prosit kbira lil mostin li se jkollhom zuntier li jixirqilhom hafna. Sfortunatament l-istess xorti ma tmissx lil Imgarrin, li ir rahal taghhom, jinsab vicin il Mosta, li nofs xoghol ghadu sar fuq progett li ilu ghaddej 10 snin. Il Kunsill Lokali ta Mgarr, specjamlemt min ilu hemm ghal dawn l-ahhar snin, imisshom jisthu. Mhux ta b'xejn il kunsill lokali ta mgarr huwa fallut

ghaddu arawh mill qrib, waqt il festa tal assunta!!

Well done to all involved and most of all the Mosta Parish.
But, we at Zejtun all we got for the restoration of the whole church which is estimated to cost €1.4 Million was a misery of €2000 from th Good Cause Fund, the same amount given to upgrade a Long Jump Run-up Path for Malta Amateur Athletics Association.
Mr Pullicino we are still waiting for your promises which more than year ago was made with Zejtun people through our Archpriest, namely to restore St Gregory Church parvis and to allocate 5 persons for the Parish Church Restoration project which has been at a standstill for the last year or so.
May we remind you that we as Zejtun people are not exempted from paying taxes.
This doe not mean that Mosta Parish Church did not deserve the work just done.

prosit tassew lil min ghamel dan ix-xoghol specjalment il-haddiema li jkunu jahdmu go dik ix-xemx kuljum. nahseb li ghangu jkun hemm xi hlas ghat-turisti biex jidhlu jaraw il-knisja u hafna aktar xoghol ta' restawr jista jsir. George Grognet De Vasse ghamel ukoll obelix fil-pjanta tieghu w jekk xi darba jsir il-holma ta' dan l'arkitet tkun kompluta.

@ M Grima...
This is not private property.
It is a national gem.
I hail from Mosta and proud. But the Rotunda does not belong to us. It belongs to anyone who can admire its beauty, its architecture, its design............its grandeur.
To be from Mosta it's something extra. It's passion and pride.

Id-disinn tal-hadid, ghal min ma jafx, huwa ta George Grognet De Vasse. Progett jixraq ghal-Mosta u l-Mostin, mhux biss, izda ghal-Maltin u l-barranin, li zgur mhux forsi huwa l-iktar post frekwentat mit-turisti li jigu f'pajjizna. Prosit u Grazzi!

Do you know how many thousands of tourists come to visit this church every year? They don't pay a fee to go inside and admire this national treasure!! Tourists are important for Malta's economy, therefore I think the project's partial financing by the government is fair enough. The rest is being paid by the church.

nahseb ghax-xoghol li taghmel il-Knisja f'Malta, hafna drabi bla hlas (ez. id-Dar tal-Providenza, is-sorijiet, tal-Muzew, u hafna ghaqdiet ohra) haqqa tircievi certu ghajnuniet mill-pajjiz, f'dak li jidhol restawr u infrastuttura, li huma vera propjeta tal-Knisja, imma nghiduha kif inhi dawn il-monumenti jaghmlu l-Malta dik li hi

There should be ballustrades instead of iron railings to match Giorgio Crognet de Vasse design. In time those iron railings will break the expensive stone work!!

Well done to all involved. Now, how about putting four wheels to the cannon which is lying on the left hand side of the newly revamped parvis. It is an eye sore, seeing a cannon without wheels. If it cannot be fitted with wheels, take it away.

This article reminds me of the outstanding backdrop the St Publius church in Floriana provided at the Calleja concert. Our churches are primarily a place of worship, but need to also be appreciated for their aesthetic and artistic value. Government policy to Invest in renovation works is a recognition of the value of our churches and is commendable.

Pity St.Publius church wasn't also lit up for the Winter Moods concert. Joseph Calleja was criticised for not uttering a word in Maltese but had that lovely backdrop (which he mightily deserves). But Winter Moods had the whole concert's theme centred on Malta, even singing one of the all time Maltese favourites, but with the beautiful St. Publius church sadly unlit.

I drive past the Mosta church everyday and I have with interest observed the works unfold with the addition of two fountains. I was unaware that the original plans provided for such fountains on the zuntier.

what! No ribbon-cutting, fanfares, mayors and ministers having their photos taken and marble plaques proclaiming how wonderful they are? Bet that's still to come. Good job done though.

Yes well done to the Resources Ministry on the rehabilitation of this parvis. But I would have preferred to see the natural "Maltese Stone" finish instead of plastering and painting it.
Marianne Mercieca
Aug 3rd 2010, 20:42
Mr. Ray Abela, I suggest you come to Mosta and take a closer look at the work done because there is no plastering and painting.... just natural Maltese stone made to perfection. A well-deserved parvis for a majestic church.

"........according to original designs made in 1860 by architect Giorgio Grognet de Vasse...."
They should have got some 'world class' architect to improve on those designs, like placing it on stilts for example. Or suggesting reopening the hole left by the bomb in the dome to serve as a 'monument'.
Jesmond Micallef
Aug 3rd 2010, 19:32
St.Publius church in Floriana was also heavily damaged during WW2 much more than a hole. Mr. Charles Sammut would have maybe wanted to have the church remain in the state it was, as a further "monument" of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche type in Berlin !!.

@ Jesmond Micallef
Sorry I was just being sarcastic, I was referring to the horrible City Gate project which, for a measly €80,000,000(initial estimtate, expect it to triple) will give us a modern (mostly empty) parliament house on stilts, an Opera House in ruins as a bombed monument and a City Gate which is not there.

When finished, a picture from a certain elevation would be ideal, but not the Royal Navy this time.!! Well done to the Resources Ministry for the rehabilitation of indeed of one the finest examples of Maltese architecture by architect Giorgio Grognet de Vasse. Well, the Minister is an architect by profession himself :-))
