Passenger movements at the airport reached a record July high of 401,952, Malta International Airport reported today.
The increase was of 15.8% over last year, or 54,729 additional movements.
“This was the first time that Malta International Airport’s monthly passenger movements exceeded the 400,000 mark,” said CEO Julian Jaeger.
“This confirms our positive outlook for 2010. These results are indeed attributable to the close cooperation with the MTA as well as the input of all other stakeholders.”
The results for the first seven months of the year, in terms of passenger movements show an increase of 11.5% when compared to the same period last year, totalling 1,782,757 passenger movements.
An increase of 9.2% in seat capacity was the main driver of this result, whilst the average seat load factor improved by 1.4 percentage points reaching 69.0% for the period January to July 2010, MIA said.
In July alone, aircraft movements and seat capacity grew by 10.8% and 12.0% respectively over the corresponding period last year, whilst the average seat load factor also increased by 2.5 percentage points to reach 77.1% from the 74.6% registered in July 2009.
All the core markets, with the exception of Germany, registered significant increases during the month of July with Spain, Italy and France growing by 41.5%, 31% and 17.5% respectively, whereas the largest market, the United Kingdom, resulted in a more modest increase of 5.2%. The German market on the other hand registered a 1% drop which is equivalent to 439 passenger movements.
Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco in comments during a visit to the Westin Dragonara Hotel, said such increases were not a coincidence but reflected the efforts of the authorities and the industry to improve accessibility.
Malta, he said, was now linked to 76 airports with scheduled services while in 2009 there were 57 such links.
The introduction of new services had seen dramatic increases, particularly from Spain , Italy and Scandinavian countries.
