When I was young I was thought to check left and right and than on zebra crossing I would be able to cross....as usual Maltese and also Foreigners cross without checking if cars are stopping...

If there is a good case to put a speed camera in Malta , put one at the Taxi Rank at the airport, what a cash bonanza for the local council , The speed and carelessness is outstanding , and sometime total disregard for passenger saftey. I came back a few years back for a holiday and i was amazed at the total lack and disregard of the road rules , speed around the famous Maltese roundabouts and no seatbelts. There should be a compulsery test every 2 years like they have in Australia , in regards to road rules and customer service.

Granted taxis tend to fly around at breakneck speeds however in this case the man was crossing an 8 lane road with a walk bridge right over his head!!
If he does survive i would sue him for the stress etc etc.. i mean what sort of normal person tries to cross that road with a walk bridge available, this is lack of discipline...the same goes for those people that as soon as they get to a zebra crossing they just step into the road..they have to wait untill cars stop! and respect traffic.

the police should be more careful with these taxi drivers. Most are crazy. the way they drive, their attitute, their appearance...God help you if you come face to face wth one of them! all in all they are the guys who should not even the driving in the first place. most often its the first impression that counts!! Imagine the tourist on his first visit to malta only to be greeted by a shabbily looking guy with a 43 inch waist and hair sticking out of his unbuttoned shirt, shaved hair and dirty appearance, and who speeds like a formula one racing driver. the first impression will not be good!

L-ewwel nett nixtieq fejqan ta’ malajr lil persuna li ntlaqtet mit-taxi. It-tieni nixtieq nigbed l-attenzjoni tal-pulizija biex joqghodu aktar attenti u jekk hemm bzonn iharku lil xi whud minn dawn ix-xufiera tat-taxi li waqt li jkunu qed isuqu mill-Marsa direzzjoni ghal-ajruport isuqu b’mod selvagg, perikoluz u b’pika liema bhala. Dan it-tip ta’ sewqan isehh specjalment meta zewg xuffiera tat-taxi jiltaqaw fl-istess triq lejn l-ajruport hawn hekk jibdew jsuqu b’velocita’ kbira biex jidhlu l-ewwel fil-venda ghat-tieni vjagg.

What would our esteemed commentators say if this taxi driver was driving like Steve McQueen in 'Bullit ' if the passengers were husband and wife getting in time for maternity unit at Mater Dei instead of giving birth on the front seat.

What was the man doing crossing there in the first place. I wonder if the car involved was a normal passenger car? What would have been said? People should never cross that road without using the proper methodes. That Bridge is not there for nothing!!! Zebra Crossings are not there just to be like a painting on the road!!! Traffic lights are not there to be used as christmas lights!!! When will people like you learn that nowadays you cannot just cross the road without using proper methodes. I am not saying that drivers are saints but pedestrians don't help by just crossing without using the proper methodes like Zebra or Pelikan Crossings, Traffic Lights,Bridges and other means.

You are saying the true. I saw them overspeeding to the way back to the airport who ever comes first. Something should be done to avoid such accidents

I just hate it when people always blame the driver. Pedestrians also have their laws and the middle of the road is not for people. Don't expect that a car with whatever speed is driving will come to a halt if someone decides to cross the road.
Unfortunately our courts always favour the pedestrian even though it is entirely his fault, but somehow if the pedestrian is entirely his fault, the case is mostly decided as 50% 50%. So the pedestrian will get away with a lump sum of money for an accident that he caused due to his carelessness. The drivers just gets hassles going court for 10 - 12 years, apart from the psychological trauma. But this is always ignored and always the driver gets the blame.

In my first comment, I started with the fact that the pedestrian was at fault.
That having been said, it is a FACT - F-A-C-T - that what I say about white taxis holds true. If you frequently use that road and area, you would know what I mean.
In my humble opinion, the court sides with the more vulnerable - and the pedestrian is more vulnerable than the driver in the car.
In Malta, the way roads are planned and the limited space we have, does it make sense to drive at breakneck speed? Please, answer that question for me. Or, is it right for a white taxi to come at desperate speed and literally try to push you off the road, violently, in whatever lane you are. Please, have the decency to write back.

Everyone seems to blame the pedestrian. Was the White taxi not at fault ?,Walk around Qawra early in the morning and watch the respect the White taxis, give other road users and pedestrians, including pedestrian crossings, which only seem to encourage acceleration, of the taxis, maybe before they have to slow down,. to allow pedestrians to legally cross.

Even if the taxi was being driven at 200km/h, unfortunately, yes, the pedestrian is to blame in this case as "the man crossed the road under the bridge". The bridge is there for a reason - crossing 8 lanes is never safe!!!!!

Do you know where this road is? If you do you should know that no matter what speed the taxi was driven he would of still hit the man as he went on this road. 8 lane roads are never to be crossed. without either lights or bridges. I use this road everyday and some people just don't care how to cross that road. Also when go in direction to st venera just up from 13th Dicember road alot of people come out from the small bushes there and surprise you when you are driving. thgey do that also on 13th December road. That is dangerous for 1 the pedestrian and 2 the driver and 3 the passenger. Also they almost never use the Zebra crossing there. And the result is what happened today!

such a multi laned road should not be crossed especially when there is a bridge.

The man should not have crossed the road, but should have used the pedestrian bridge.
That having been said, the authorities should take note that white taxis making their way back to MIA are doing so at breakneck speed and I have to state that MOST TAXIS are doing this. Something about this should be done. They are often in competition between themselves as to who arrives first in order to be next in line for service at MIA!

Fact! I have reported numerous white taxis that broke a handful of laws & regulations to the authorities, but obviously the response I always get from them seems to make the 'Ghajn ma tara, qalb ma tuga' proverb quite a real one indeed.
