Law student Byron Camilleri, 23, has been elected Mayor of Fgura.

He succeeds Darren Marmara who stepped down on July 16, minutes before facing a motion of no confidence submitted by fellow Labour councillors who complained of "lack of serenity" within the council.

The election was held after deputy mayor Anthony Degiovanni, a former mayor, renounced to being appointed mayor again.

Mr Degiovanni won 1,359 first count votes in the 2009 election, trailing Mr Marmara's 1,570.

Mr Camilleri won 652 first count votes.

Labour holds a comfortable majority in the council.
