Two Romanians, Suzana Vladescu, 60 and Theodor Dumitrescu, 42 were today accused in court with pickpocketing while they queued at McDonald's in Republic Street, Valletta.
They were arrested after their alleged actions were recorded on CCTV.
They pleaded not guilty.
Police Inspector James Grech said the two arrived in Malta as tourists for a week's visit.
"They have no hotel, no friends, and can't even name the people who have been hosting them in Malta," he said.
He objected to bail, saying that since Romania was a member of the EU, they could easily abscond.
Police sources said that the two allegedly used to queue at McDonalds and Burger King and pick-pocket other clients. Reports of pick-pocketing ceased since they were arrested last week.
The accused were remanded in custody.
