Joseph Muscat visiting Libya
Labour leader Joseph Muscat is in Libya for a number of meetings, the PL announced this evening.
It said the visit is part of regular contacts between the two sides.
Dr Muscat is accompanied by party foreign affairs spokesman George Vella, the chairman of the PL Coordinating Group, Karmenu Vella, health spokesman Michael Farrugia and International Secretary Alex Sceberras Trigona.
This is Dr Muscat's second visit to Libya since his appointment at party leader. During his first visit, in October 2008, he met senior officials of the government and the Libyan People's Congress and discussed various issues including migration and energy.

Are we to assume that Dr.Muscat and his entourage will give a detailed report on what is to be discussed between the two sides to the public? Or is this another 'mhux fl-interess tal-poplu' matter?

Visits by senior delegations to Libya be they from the government or from the opposition are always most welcome. There are issues such as the illegal immigration with departure from the shore and the potential catastrophic consequences which an oil spill from the intended BP deep oil well exploration might create where assurances from Libya that our national interests are being taken into consideration will help immensely to strengthen friendly relationships.
In the years prior to EU accession we did not give our relations with Libya the importance they deserved and whatever is diplomatically said relations are still far from the level of warm friendship of previous decades. Both Malta and Libya have a lot to gain from close and friendly relations. In Libya's development drive to move technically forward Malta can offer a wealth of skills in the educational, health and IT sectors just to mention a few obvious areas of potential cooperation.
On the people level there is also a strong affinity in culture and traditions which makes it easier for Maltese to relate with the Libyan people than is the case with other Europeans. Hope the PL will have a fruitful visit

The last time he visited Libya he came back stating that he was given access to parts of a secret document vis a vis Libya's agreement with Italy. It was then revealed that this agreement was available on the internet and was printed as a supplement with the Libyan newspaper!!
