Air Malta plane, vehicle collide - four flights delayed

Air Malta has launched an investigation after a vehicle carrying mobile steps collided with an aircraft on the apron yesterday afternoon, delaying at least four flights.

The incident took place at Malta International Airport at 12.18 p.m. when the mobile steps were being driven towards the plane which had just arrived from Budapest and was scheduled to depart for Paris Charles De Gaulle airport soon after.

A spokesman for the national airline said the incident caused a dent on the plane and delayed Air Malta's flights to Vienna, Gatwick, Kiev and Paris Charles De Gaulle.

On December 30, 2009, a Globe Ground Malta van collided with a Libyan Arab Airlines Bombardier CRJ-900ER aircraft. The airplane was parked on the apron when the collision occurred not long before it was due to take off.

Dear Mr Calafato, chill down mate :) Ms Buhagiar is only Maltese! No fault of hers. Typical I do not care attitude and no responsability at all (not about this particular case, but general Maltese mentality). Of course everyone commits mistakes, but not everyone ADMITS. This is not a point of the world revolves around anyone or being perfect.... Sewwa jghid il-Malti l-Ispizjar milli jkollu ....... nahseb dil-verzjoni aktar decenti ghal fuq Times!

Because later in the day the same aircraft will be used on other routes hence the "knock on" delay to these flights also. An individual aircraft isn't only used on one route in the same day, when it returns it might then go to Gatwick, return and then go to Vienna etc.

All personnel working inside the airfield have their police conduct checked by their employers before being allowed to be start employment anywhere in the airfield. Besides that, to be allowed into the airside of the airport you have to apply for a special pass, and to obtain this pass your background will be checked, including any pending cases in court which are not listed on the police conduct.
As for driving licenses, no one can drive in the airfield without a special driving license (which is issued from the MIA) And before you can obtain this license you have to attend a course where all rules and regulations are explained and shown.
So my conclusion is this - yes there are controls, its not a jungle in the airfield. But even so, accidents do happen, we're still humans not robots...

Why who else could be to blame? The aircraft that was parked? The pilot for parking the aircraft there?

@Michael Vella:

Ah, but was the aeroplane supposed to be parked there? Plenty of yellow lines they have, last time I took a flight. :)

I can assure you that there are cameras in the cargo and luggage handling areas. So please before scribbling here inform yourself better on the subject. Btw: no union ordered a strike because of the cameras.

Globe Ground is another company, AirMalta does its own handling, that means that the two accidents don't have anything to do with each other, and no, not the same driver. It must be pointed out that AirMalta delayed the flights and not simply cancelled flights like some other cheap Airline. On the other hand the accident was a minor one, however AirMalta opted to take all necessary precautions and had to wait for clearance from the manufacturers of the aircraft. Such accidents and the consequent delays show that AirMalta opted to take the long and costly road to ensure passenger service and comfort by not cancelling the flight and to ensure safety for its esteemed clients. Hats off to Airmalta and its staff.
