Air Malta plane, vehicle collide - four flights delayed
Air Malta has launched an investigation after a vehicle carrying mobile steps collided with an aircraft on the apron yesterday afternoon, delaying at least four flights.
The incident took place at Malta International Airport at 12.18 p.m. when the mobile steps were being driven towards the plane which had just arrived from Budapest and was scheduled to depart for Paris Charles De Gaulle airport soon after.
A spokesman for the national airline said the incident caused a dent on the plane and delayed Air Malta's flights to Vienna, Gatwick, Kiev and Paris Charles De Gaulle.
On December 30, 2009, a Globe Ground Malta van collided with a Libyan Arab Airlines Bombardier CRJ-900ER aircraft. The airplane was parked on the apron when the collision occurred not long before it was due to take off.

There is no excuse for incompetence, negligence so on, and it happens all of the time with Air Malta.Only last week i was traveling from New York To London, then transferring onto air Malta to head to the Maltese Islands.Informed Air Malta we were going to be delayed from NY as it is requested on the ticket but what happens no they have no record and we had to purchase another ticket. Instead of air Malta putting us on the next available flight like all other airlines do. "No No Sir said Air Malta rep. No Show no go. Purchased another return ticket. Never will i fly air Malta it is a joke of an airline.

Dear Ms. Buhagiar,
We all agree that nobody is perfect. We also all agree that everybody (including myself!!) makes mistakes. I do however INSIST that everybody (including myself) be held responsible for his or her actions. Is there anything wrong with this??? All too often we seem to dismiss whatever happens as an accident. Its seems we have conveniently forgotten the meaning of such words as negligence and irresponsibility. Or would you prefer to live in a society where nobody is responsible for their actions????

Dear Mr Calafato, chill down mate :) Ms Buhagiar is only Maltese! No fault of hers. Typical I do not care attitude and no responsability at all (not about this particular case, but general Maltese mentality). Of course everyone commits mistakes, but not everyone ADMITS. This is not a point of the world revolves around anyone or being perfect.... Sewwa jghid il-Malti l-Ispizjar milli jkollu ....... nahseb dil-verzjoni aktar decenti ghal fuq Times!

I cannot believe some people are so quick to judge, blame and think they are God almighty! First of all you have to see the quality of these mobile steps. Last time I traveled I was disgusted with all the machinery used by these poor men to accommodate us. I cannot agree more with Marbert Aquiline and thank all of these men who work so hard and do miracles every single day.Unlike Robert Calafato, Edwin Mifsud, Ian Pace, J.Oatmon and J Camilleri who think everything revolves around them. Seems to me they're not at all human as they never have an accident, my my! So perfect, well done and God bless you!!!!!!

Next time when flying to a destination somewhere, just before you board the plane on the apron, have a quick look at the areas around cargo hold door apertures on the fuselage and see if you can locate any repair patches !! Probably, you'll be surprised !!

As I have stated on several occasions, accidents do not happen , they are caused to happen. Someone caused this accident to happen and should be held responsible. There are no two ways about this!!
As to security clearance checks, if my memory serves me well, there were two cases when known criminals were awarded cleaning contracts at MIA and the Law Courts!!!

You comment as if here in Malta there are no checks when employees are enrolled in a company. Do you seriously think that people are picked up from the street to do specific jobs at the airport. I hope you are not serious about questioning the policies about staff employment. Instead of dedicating yourselves to nonsense comments, you should try online sudoku.

Can someone explain, why it has to cause a delay in flights to Vienna, Gatwick, Kiev when the plane involved was scheduled to go to Paris Charles De Gaulle!!!!!!!
C Cassar
Jul 31st 2010, 12:37
Because later in the day the same aircraft will be used on other routes hence the "knock on" delay to these flights also. An individual aircraft isn't only used on one route in the same day, when it returns it might then go to Gatwick, return and then go to Vienna etc.

@ J. Demanuele
YES - ABSOLUTELY YES.
Airport security is of paramount importance. How about if Mr Demanuele has his luggage stolen or tampared, with? How about if he is on a flight with a damaged aircraft? This has nothing to do with worker's rights but more with workers wrongs.

All personnel working inside the airfield have their police conduct checked by their employers before being allowed to be start employment anywhere in the airfield. Besides that, to be allowed into the airside of the airport you have to apply for a special pass, and to obtain this pass your background will be checked, including any pending cases in court which are not listed on the police conduct.
As for driving licenses, no one can drive in the airfield without a special driving license (which is issued from the MIA) And before you can obtain this license you have to attend a course where all rules and regulations are explained and shown.
So my conclusion is this - yes there are controls, its not a jungle in the airfield. But even so, accidents do happen, we're still humans not robots...

Why everybody jump to the conclusion that the driver is to blame and even that he did this purposely? Let’s wait for the investigation to take its course and see how and why this happened. As for Mr. J.Oatman he has already found this poor driver guilty so let’s fire him and send him to prison for sabotage!! Poor guy he is guilty because Mr. Oatman this so, come on man!!! As for CCTV as far as I know they are installed not only in the baggage handling area but in and around the whole airport. So let’s don’t cry “wolf” when there might be not.

Why who else could be to blame? The aircraft that was parked? The pilot for parking the aircraft there?

@Michael Vella:
Ah, but was the aeroplane supposed to be parked there? Plenty of yellow lines they have, last time I took a flight. :)

In these accidents the vehicle driver is to blame, since he is duty bound to avoid the aircraft at all costs.
Does the airports authority check driving records and criminal records when employing drivers and ground staff I wonder? Remember we just had two baggage handlers caught on CCTV, at Luton in the UK jailed for 3+ years, for theft from bags at the airport. Does Malta have CCTV recording equipment in the baggage handling areas? - perhaps the union would not allow this, and go on strike for 'invasion of privacy' or some such rubbish?

I can assure you that there are cameras in the cargo and luggage handling areas. So please before scribbling here inform yourself better on the subject. Btw: no union ordered a strike because of the cameras.

Globe Ground is another company, AirMalta does its own handling, that means that the two accidents don't have anything to do with each other, and no, not the same driver. It must be pointed out that AirMalta delayed the flights and not simply cancelled flights like some other cheap Airline. On the other hand the accident was a minor one, however AirMalta opted to take all necessary precautions and had to wait for clearance from the manufacturers of the aircraft. Such accidents and the consequent delays show that AirMalta opted to take the long and costly road to ensure passenger service and comfort by not cancelling the flight and to ensure safety for its esteemed clients. Hats off to Airmalta and its staff.
