Go plans €100 million upgrade of networks

Go, Melita launch new sports channels

The company has also won exclusivity to air the matches from the English Premier League and Italian Serie A, due to kick off next month.

Go has already invested €7 million in its TV infrastructure since it started operating in television in 2007, chief executive officer David Kay said.

He added that the company’s TV customer base had reached over 53,000 subscribers from under 10,000 in 2007.

Yesterday the company also launched Go Stars, a premium pay channel which transmits movies of all genres and other entertainment programmes.

Meanwhile, rival telecoms company Melita also announced new investment in its system yesterday, as well as five new sport channels, one in high definition.

The new channels include Malta Stars, Football Stars 1 and 2, All Stars and Stars HD, all of which, Melita said, would be available from August 7.

Football Stars 1 and 2 will provide live coverage of international football such as the Spanish Primera Liga, Bundesliga, Carling Cup, Uefa Euro 2010 Qualifiers, Bayern Munich TV and Barca TV.

All Stars offers a variety of international sports including WWE wrestling, NBA basketball matches, ATG horse racing, Red Bull X-Fighters, Red Bull Air Race, boxing and many more. Stars HD offers a selection of sports broadcast in high definition. And Malta Stars will provide local sports coverage.

The investment includes upgrading works at Melita’s technical centre in Madliena and follows the launch of the company’s high definition service.
