All in the name of a joke
Parliament and later the Law Courts provided an unusual backdrop this morning for a young man who decided to sunbathe, to the amusement, or rather disgust, of the Valletta visitors and community.
Cedric Vella of Iklin and Mauro Busuttil of Attard got together and decided to launch a series of video pranks You Tube. This morning’s adventure was the first.
With Mauro filming and Cedric acting, Cedric first put up his sunbed in front of Parliament, lay on it in his hat, T-Shirt and swimming trunks and applied sunblock as he sunbathed.
He was soon asked to leave by the police. He picked up his deckchair and moved to in front of the Law Courts, soon to leave again and lose himself in the Valletta crowd as passers-by uttered their disgust, and swore at him while others laughed and looked on bemused.

Haha, kudos to you Cedric :) This news item has gotten a lot of well-deserved attention :)
I applaud clean jokes like this that send out a message in such an elegant way.
As for the police force in Malta... would be interesting to see 'why' they asked Cedric to leave. If the law is equal to all, why wasn't the man wearing his under-vest and sitting on a stone opposite Cedric asked to leave also?

I'm amazed they didn't call the army for such a menacing protest!!!
...Don't mind my sarcasm..I'm just amazed that a maltese who makes a joke (whilst properly dressed) , is asked to leave, whilst passer-by's Insult and make public disturbance (and they aren't punished)
Oh and btw... What about the foreigners who make a whole bunch of noise in valletta, did anyone ask them to leave??

The people uttering their disgust and swearing at this must be a real bunch of hypocrites...I am sure they would have loved to have the guts of doing something themselves but simply do not have the balls. If Cedric and Mauro here were trying to showcase the fact that Parliament and the Lawcourts practically close down for a long summer recess whilst Joe Public still has to work all the year round even in summer (save for annual leave) and at the same time waiting for some important decision to be taken through these institutions, then hats off to them. Cedric and Mauro should be congratulated and more publicity should be actually given.
Most of us remember the program on TVM or was it MTV or even Xandir Malta in those days presented by 'Joe' later Peppi Azzopardi and his clan and those tapes have gone missing save for a very few whcih were aimed at the local politics as well as some local traditions. Keep these clips coming, we all need to 'Look on the bright side of life' !!!

If the people doing the prank informed just the police it was a joke police would have not asked them to leave.
One has to understand that a Policeman Represents Authority and the Democratic decision which is usually supported by the people of a nation. If people didn't see the police take action Probably still some of them would have asked why the police was not taking any action.
let's just be capable to make jokes without offending any one.

This is so unbelievable!!!!! "Asked to leave by the police"????? Mela shouldn't the police arrest the huge number of tourists and locals who sunbath and dance to the music of the new fountain at Main Guard in Valletta??? I was there last Thursday at 6pm and all these italians and germans where in there swimsuits with towels running around everywhere laughing and dancing in the water!!! Where they supposed to be told off by the police??? I dont think so as Minister Giovanna Debono passed by twice and simply smiled at the scene and walked away!!!! Was it because they were foriegners or maybe because the new square where thousands of euros where spent was meant to be a modern beach or something????

If it had been a topless woman sunbathing it would have been one thing but what this actor did is purely humor!!! Can't you see? Even what he is wearing is stupid, those socks....
Haven't you people passed buy the court and see big bellied old men in their vests, with one foot against the wall? Sometimes indecent women stops chattering with them as well, no one ever said anything to them,f or obvious reasons, cause they are doing no harm!
Why was this man banished?? After all who ever saw him put sunblock on must have got the message that sunblock is an important thing to have in summer, also he was wearing a hat, that is no matter how stupid it may look it is an asset to wear it, whilst spending long hours in the sun..Whoever said 'what about if tomorrow we wake up to see 50 people sunbathing?' please face reality it takes guts to do such a thing
With regards the swearing, it shows what a low class nation we maltese are!!! Do we have to swear?? Can't we get along and ignore whats not in our business??

And in the name of the freedom of art & speech, AMEN.
The phenomenon when the Maltese laugh at the british sitcoms and italian pranks, such as Mr. Bean and Fantozzi, but are disgusted when a fellow Maltese tries to do something which he may think is hilarious to post on the net.. and waalllaaa.. we start swearing at the poor bloke!
and in the sake of originality we maltese produce, the 'puliti' disgust themselves... i bloody would like to know how these 'polite' persons swore at the poor fellow.. HAHA, sure they weren't polite after all!..
We always have to find some people who stop others becuase they think is 'immoral' to them and not normal.
Thank you conservative ignorants

"as passers-by uttered their disgust, and swore at him"
We Maltese clearly need a course in humour. We lack a sense of humour. It is just a joke, there was no need for the passers-by to swear at him. Why don't we watch British sitcoms? We could learn a thing or two about humour and develop a good sense of humour. The British could teach us a lot on humour.

God bless these two souls for making people laugh or smile!! For something as silly as this, one needs a lot of courage in this country! More courage than to be a criminal for sure!
Those who can't take a joke and are so ready to judge by insults should think "recluse" because they are not fit among balanced people who can enjoy life! If stiff is better, please make space for the light hearted and take these police officers with you !

Come on , where is your sense of Humour for God Sake, lighten up a bit, most of you Maltese who never been out your own doorstep just don't know how the other half live, i think some of you people are just jealous of us Britons cause we have a great British sense of humour and this is what keeps us going even during the gloom of the recession or say a funeral, just to break the ice and cover up our anxieties. I know one nation that has NIL sense of humour whatsoever and thats the Germans, but Malta you have satellite tv, cable tv and internet, surely by now you have caught up with the rest of the world or not. Try and go to Amsterdam or Zandvoort there they walk about topless, i wonder what the bill will do if some tourist walk about half naked in Valletta, i guess world war three would break out and the men of the cloth will excomunicate the individual(s) so live and let live, don't get yourselves a bad name, charging extra is one thing, but having a dry humour is another.

This really is about the Maltese sense of humor. We do not need to copy the British one. We live in two completely different environs and is there a benchmark the the British one is the best? The plain truth is that we do not accept such things that easy on our doorsteps, albeit that we laugh when we see these happen on TV. So well done boys!

The problem with this action is that it might not have been very funny. If they had succeeded to make some people laugh, then they might have increased the lifespan of such people, according to Dr. Al Sears.
Perhaps next time they might enact the following (with all due respect to Maltese hunters). One can read more on the views of Dr. Al Sears, the source of the following:
A couple of hunters are out in the woods when one of them grabs his chest, falls to the ground, and then lies there motionless.
The other hunter calls 911. “My friend won’t get up, and I think he’s dead! What should I do?”
The operator, in a calm, soothing voice, says: “Just take it easy. I can help. First, you have to make sure he’s dead.”
There’s a silence… then the operator hears two shots.
The hunter’s voice comes back on the line. “Okay, what do I do next?”

But we can still see tourist going around shirtless in Valletta main street.. or even at restaurants like Mac Donald's. I even saw tourists entering Bugibba's Mac Donalds with a transparent bikini almost half naked and nobody is telling them off!!!! when we asked the management at Mac Donalds about whats the difference between telling off a Maltese and not telling off a forigner they simply told us that it would be sexual heressment .. Well, that was a candid camera stunt - exposing people to an unusual situation to see how they react. If some reacted with anger and swearing, that's part of our reality being exposed.
The police asking the actor to leave may also have been for HIS protection, if there was the chance of some very 'tolerant' members of our society becoming aggressive with him, without realising it was just a jest. They after all have the duty to keep the peace by preventing the formation of angry mobs, so we can't blame the police for doing their job. They know very well that some people can't cope rationally with an unusual situation, like if you decide to cross the road in your bikini for example :)

Why did the police move him? On what grounds?
What if anyone sitting on the benches in St George's Square apply a bit of suncream - will they be moved on also?
Or is it because he brought along his own seat? if yes, what about the portable seats incorporated in walking sticks?

Marvellous effort, only sorry not to have witnessed it myself - please please more such stunts to keep the stuffed shirts and self appointed arbiters of public taste and morality engorged in their self aggrandisement.
The more the narrow minded bigoted critics are kept happy and their holier than thou pontifications get ridiculed the quicker an imaginative and broader cultural perspective shall emerge and society be the better for it.
One can only hope it was the pompous old f.rts, to use a rugby acronym, that were being videod.

Adrian, I agree with you. Too many in Malta behave like the Taleban. They seem to want to tell everyone how they should behave. I cannot understand how some ignorant morons got upset about this. I hope this does not deter others. Lighten up guys......

Quote: '...passers-by uttered their disgust, and swore at him.'
Of course, these holier-than-thous, these perfect citizens WOULD 'utter disgust' and 'swear at him', as if we have lost all sense of wit and humour in this country - well, did we ever have any? - and I suppose that many of these passers-by are those who think that they are serious, well-mannered, mature, and the perfect type of citizens to have in a country. Well, good for these two blokes, well done, I say! It would be better if we swore at the glorified criminals that we have outside the prisons! Enough said!

"He was soon asked to leave by the police. He picked up his deckchair and moved to in front of the Law Courts, soon to leave again and lose himself in the Valletta crowd as passers-by uttered their disgust, and swore at him."
Where's our sense of humour?
Did the police admonish the people who swore at him in public?
Swearing is certainly much more disgusting than sitting on a deckchair in Republic street!!

Typical Maltese friendliness and relaxed attitudes. Truth is we are a bigoted, narrow-minded people with a minuscule sense of humour who take offense at anything.
