Luggage charge is a flight of fancy

I am reluctant to add to the seemingly endless debate regarding the pros and cons of the various airlines serving Malta.

I have never used the so-called "low-cost airlines" and am a reasonably satisfied customer of Air Malta.

Recently, however, I came across a piece of unrivalled Air Malta silliness that requires either a totally reasoned explanation or a complete management change at Air Malta.

I wish to fly on Air Malta from Malta to Gatwick. The total cost of a single ticket in September is €141.95. The cost of checking an excess bag of 21 kilos on the same flight is €250. How does Air Malta charge €141.95 for an animate object weighing 85 kilos (me), seating and feeding same animate object and then charge almost twice as much for throwing an inanimate object of less than a quarter of my weight into the hold?

The solution is obviously to buy a second ticket for €141 and seat my 21-kilo inanimate object beside me! It would not require feeding or any care whatsoever and would never use the toilet. It would never recline its seat, would have no electronic devices to turn on or off, would not kick the seat in front and would always keep its seat belt fastened. It would, in fact, be the perfect passenger and I would save €109!

I have to believe that Air Malta would not seat my inanimate object of 21 kilos, therefore the other solution would be to offer a free ticket to London to some person, who would check a 20-kilo bag for me and I would still save €109 and Air Malta would have to feed and look after my new animate companion.

All joking aside, who is responsible for this ridiculous pricing and are they still employed by Air Malta?
