One person was killed and eight others injured in a bomb blast at a southern Orthodox church in Ukraine yesterday, officials said.
A home-made explosive device went off near the entrance to the church, in the southern city of Zaporozhye, Emergencies Ministry spokesman Yulia Barysheva told The Associated Press.
She said nine people had been wounded, one seriously. A duty nurse at a Zaporozhye hospital, Irina Sergeyenko, later said one of the victims had died.
The explosion came on the day the former Soviet nation was marking the anniversary of its conversion to Christianity in 988 AD.
Nationalist groups have protested at the visit of Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kiril, who was on the second to last day of an eight-day visit.
There was no official word of a motive for the bombing.
