Whale killed by cruise ship
A cruise ship operating in Alaska fatally struck a whale.
Princess Cruises said the dead whale became stuck at the bow of the Sapphire Princess, and the vessel was stopped south of Douglas Island until the carcass could be removed.
Princess spokesman Kirby Day said the dead whale was noticed as the ship travelled from Ketchikan to Juneau.
Kaja Brix with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the animal appears to have been a juvenile humpback whale.
Ms Brix said the ship had to increase power to maintain speed, indicating the strike occurred then.

I knew of a brilliant captain of a ship who found that after carening and cleaned his ship at a foreign dockyard, he still had to increase power to maintain speed. Before he came into the Grand Harbour he asked a trusted local diver to check the hull. There welded on the bottom of the hull was a big steel box containing cargo which was not listed on the captain's list!!! The captain watched his hull carefully when he anchored in Malta, and no one knew what happened to those who went to unweld the steel box off the hull that night!!!
It is not only whales attached to the bulbous bow that slows a ship down. Any good captain knows his hull well enough!!!
