Mo Farah and Chris Thompson are targeting further glory in the European Championships in Barcelona after their remarkable one-two in the 10,000 metres on Tuesday night.

Farah was so confident of victory in the closing stages, he had the time to turn round and encourage British team-mate Thompson, who duly responded to snatch silver as he held off Daniele Meucci on the line.

And the pair “celebrated” with an ice bath back at the team hotel to ensure they will be fit in time for today’s heats of the 5,000m.

“I will go into the 5k with a spring in my step,” Thompson said.

“This will give me loads of confidence and if I can perform as hard as I did then it’ll be another great night for British distance running.”

Farah’s winning time of 28 minutes 24.99 seconds was almost a minute slower than his fastest time this year, but the Somalia-born 27-year-old’s tactics proved spot on.

He finally hit the front in a slow race with five laps to go, but then beckoned Spain’s Ayad Lamdassem through to take up the pace with just over three laps remaining.

A lap later, Farah remarkably turned to urge on Thompson, who was engaged in a battle with Italy’s Meucci some 30m behind.

And the gambit paid massive dividends as Farah stormed clear with 350m to go and Thompson produced a rousing finish to overhaul Lamdassem and just hold off Meucci on the line, both athletes given the same time of 28:27.33.

“I was thinking Chris has to do something, he has to come and close the gap and that’s what I was saying to him,” explained Farah.
