Richard Ambery has joined Ganado & Associates, Advocates, as a partner in their Investment Funds and Services Group. Mr Ambery, who qualified as a solicitor of the Supreme Court in England & Wales and subsequently in Ireland, has over 15 years’ experience advising multinational corporations, banks, government bodies, rating agencies and investment funds in Europe, East Asia and the United States on a wide variety of finance transactions with a focus on the debt capital, derivatives and asset-backed securities markets.

Mr Ambery moved to Malta from Ireland where he was a partner in the country’s leading corporate law firm, Arthur Cox. The bulk of his experience was garnered in the City of London including stints at “magic circle” firms Clifford Chance and Freshfields, where he qualified. Graduating from the University of Bristol in 1988, he was registered as a market professional with The Securities Association, forerunner of the UK Financial Services Authority before attending the Chancery Lane branch of the College of Law in London.

Mr Ambery said he was “delighted to be joining Ganado & Associates at a time when Malta offers a range of exciting prospects in the investment funds and capital markets sectors. Through careful management and good fortune the country has emerged largely unscathed from a financial crisis that still grips most economies in the region.

“The legislative backlash that has followed in its wake is pushing many areas of financial activity towards more boutique operations established within the European Union. Malta offers a sophisticated, transparent, flexible and responsive regulatory regime together with a competitively priced professional services infrastructure targeted by the funds industry for investment activity. I’m excited about applying my experience and expertise to the unique opportunities the island presents.”

Managing partner, Max Ganado commented: “Richard Ambery’s arrival is further proof of G&A’s long-standing commitment to offer high quality services to the international business community, reflecting not only the jurisdiction’s growing importance as a financial services centre, but our partnership with clients and the authorities in that process.

Richard and I have worked on a number of projects over the years and I am gratified by how easily he has integrated into our Association. I look forward to his support also on the development of systems within the organisation.”

Ganado & Associates, Advocates is currently one of Malta’s largest law firms, with close to 50 lawyers (of which 14 are partners) supported by over 60 staff. G&A specialises mainly in shipping (litigation, shipping companies and finance and ship registration) and financial services (banking, investment services and funds, insurance and trusts) with departments in other practice areas such as general litigation, general corporate, company secretarial and governance, taxation and labour law.
