Repair works on Marsa footbridge commence
Repair works on the Marsa pedestrian footbridge have commenced, Transport Malta said.
It said the works are being carried out between 3 and 11 p.m. to minimise the impact on traffic. The works are expected to be completed by Friday.
The bridge was hit and slightly damaged by an excavator which was being transported on a trailer in April, causing traffic chaos for several hours.
In May, Transport Malta filed a judicial protest calling on the owner and the driver of a trailer to foot the bill for the repair work.
In the protest, Transport Malta called on 60-year-old Carmel Spiteri, the owner, and the driver, also a Carmel Spiteri, aged 56 to pay for the damages.
Transport Malta said the driver caused the incident due to negligence and in breach of driving regulations. The owner was also responsible, it said, because the vehicle was not licensed or insured. The licence had expired in August 2006.

I thought you were clever! A sign is made on both sides of the bridge so that one can see it when driving in both directions. Is this so strange?

I bet that these chaps will get away with a slap in the hand, especially the owner, and if he is a contractor, I am more than convinced that I will win the bet as he will threaten with making redundant his workers if he is punished because that is the latest norm that certain employers are doing if they do not get things their own way!

" The vehicle was not licensed or insured. The licence had expired in August 2006."
Where are Transport Malta and the traffic wardens. Have the vehicles been impounded for being driven on the road without insurance cover and duly licenced? Have the owners been charged a hefty penalty for such contraventions? My son was slapped with a traffic offence ticket for not affixing his new licence on the windscreen just a few hours after the date of expiry of the relative licence.

Presumable no VRT either.
Still it's only four years since it was taxed and insured so not long then hey?

Surely the vehicle that caused the damage should be confiscated and crushed as well as the owner paying for the repairs to the bridge, since he should not have been on the road in the first place with a license that expired 4 years ago.

The law provides for a maximum height of 4 metres (from the surface of the road), inxcluding the cargo being carried where the vehicle is a goods vehicle. If a hire load has to be carried, in special circumstances, then a permit is required from Transport Malta and police escort is required.

@Joseph Galea
The sign you mentioned should be fixed at a point before entering the road leading to such a bridge.
If fixed on both sides of the bridge, what is the driver supposed to do at this point, make a u-turn and drive back on the wrong side of the road?

I hope that a sign, on both sides of the bridge, stating what is the maximum height that can pass under the bridge, will also be put in place on the bridge. This is a must!

Also normally with that, they put horizontal poles hanged on chains, so that if you are driving & you hit it, you will be aware you will not pass from under the bridge.
Making signs i don't think its enough, as it leaves room for human estimation error.
Its better to hit a pipe than hitting the bridge!!

"The licence had expired in August 2006" - and nobody notices! That's what I call OUTSTANDING! 4 years!!!!

Where were the wardens during these last four years? Maybe I can answer that. 1. Roaming the streets to fix tickets on the windscreens of the cars of bona fide drivers who make minor traffic infringments, and 2. watching the monitors to issue tickets to drivers exceeding 60 kmp whilst exitising the tunnels in St Julians and St. Venera without any tolerance. These two Spiter's must be very daring and rough to get away with a lack of a licence for four years. Here again the wardens are afraid to deal with this type of people, similiarly with the bus drivers.

In a perfect world the Carmel Spiteris, if guilty, would also pay for about €20 petrol burnt, a packet of cigarettes and my confessor (my feelings towards the people responsible were't so catholic) !! :)

e de BONO where does catholicity fit in this accident. If you are lapsed by blaspheming for everything that happens, it will always be your fault. Accidents do happen. Who knows? Maybe someday it will be YOU who will be responsible for something like that. In another mode or in another story.

Ms/rs/r J. Farrugia
Who are you to judge de Bono and conclude that he is a blasphomeus person?
He is merely adding some wit and humour to this dire state of affairs in this country.
Thank God that us, real Catholics, can find space to forgive all you holier than thou charcters; always ready with a double barrelled shotgun to shoot down any feather that may, seemingly, flutter.
God is love
