Italy goalkeeper Marchetti for sale

Cagliari have put Italy goalkeeper Federico Marchetti up for sale after the player asked to leave the club.

Marchetti, Italy's second-choice stopper, had been linked to Sampdoria but the deal broke down leaving the player disappointed after he had set his sights on a move.

A statement from the club said: "Cagliari Calcio takes note that the player Federico Marchetti has expressed his desire to leave across the media.

"The club will now do everything to make him happy. Whenever Marchetti effectively leaves Cagliari, the first-choice goalkeeper will be [Michael] Agazzi. Cagliari Calcio are not looking for a new goalkeeper."

The 27-year-old Marchetti made three appearances at the World Cup this summer, coming on a substitute after an injury to Gianluigi Buffon in the opening match and then keeping his place for the next two matches before Italy were knocked out at the end of the group stages.

He has earned seven caps since making his debut in May of last year.

That call-up came following an impressive start to his Cagliari career, having joined the club initially on loan from AlbinoLeffe in July 2008.

Cagliari made the move to sign him outright in February this year.
