CMA CGM registers leviathan in Malta

CMA CGM has taken delivery of Leo, the fifth of a series of twelve 11,400 TEU container ships.

Built by Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyards, this leviathan, registered in Malta, will be one of largest container ships sailing under Maltese flag.

Another vessel to be delivered soon will also be registered in Malta.

The Leo is 360 metres long, 45 metres wide and has a draught of 15.5 metres. It is one of the first vessels of the group to receive the new Bureau Veritas classification notations Clean Ship C and FORS.

These notations confirm the environmental performance of the vessel which is equipped with innovative environmental-friendly features, including an electronically controlled engine, reducing oil and fuel consumption, a fast oil recovery system, and a leading edge rudder and an optimised hull design improving the vessel’s hydrodynamics, thus reducing its carbon emissions.

The Lep will join the Christophe Colomb and the Amerigo Vespucci on the French Asia Line service operated between Asia and Europe. This key market has been steadily growing for months and registered a 22 per cent growth since the beginning of the year.

At the beginning of next month, the group will also take delivery of the Pegasus, sister ship of Leo.
