Consultation on national environment policy launched
Video: Mark Zammit Cordina
An issue paper listing the proposed priorities for a national environment policy has been published, launching the consultation phase before the drawing up of the policy, which should be available by mid-next year.
The paper, work on which started in May, deals with a number of issues, including air, climate, soil, fresh water, coastal and marine waters, biodiversity, waste management, noise and land use.
The consultation is open until September. Meetings with stakeholders, environment non-governmental organisation and government entities will be held and anyone can contribute to the debate.
The challenges to be faced and their socio economic impact will be identified following the consultation phase.

Dr. De Marco,
Some good quotes :
''We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.'' ~Thomas Fuller, Gnomologia, 1732
Protect our water, aquifers, all new buildings should have wells, water conservation and stop drying our valleys due to watter run-off and over-pumping.
''We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.'' ~Native American Proverb
Always keep in mind what we do. For every action there is a consequence. Please take care of our little island before we reach the point of no return!
''When we heal the earth, we heal ourselves.'' ~David Orr
Taking care of our surrounding environment is only in the end going to help us live a better and healthier life. Look around you and one realises that if everyone did his/her part we will be living in a better place.
And last but definetly not least, stop letting Malta turn into a CONCRETE JUNGLE!
We need open spaces and recreational areas and not concrete appartments that remain empty for years!.

Dr. De Marco,
Back again talk, and more talk, the end result NOTHING concrete to delivered. I was thinking to point to you, Sir, what is it you are trying to pull?
We have been complaining more than THREE YEARS!
Sir, last year we even forwarded yours truly and other top heads running the country a petition signed by hundreds because of all night 'Disco Beat', the sound level of which it is so disgusting that I know there were reports coming from Mount Carmel Hospital, from Old People Home in Rabat, etc. Just this weekend police where informed of this all night bullying.
Sir, you must realize that people complaining and on the receiving end must be being bullied if their complain is ignored. Otherwise things would have been settled ages ago.
What do you mean consultation, as usual nice words but no bone!
Sir, hear the people because out there people are on the receiving end and no one seem accountable, a friend of mine said: Money is the route!
So what is the use of these consultations when the outcome has already been in the pipe line.

Please Minister Mario De Marco, saveguard our aquifer that on a good raining season it produced 16000 gallons of portabel natural water every day.... This spring water is going to be contaminated from a cemetery that the Nadur church is developing ,when there is no need for it, because at Nadur there is all ready an existent one.

Minister De Marco does genuiene touches to the enviornment and I am sure that He will look after the issues that need protection, like fresh water and air are two big assets .
Water is liquid gold in any country and we must preserve it especeally when it is used for agricultural, like the natural resource of spring fresh water at Ghajn Qasab Valley on the way to Ramla Bay at Nadur this water is going to be contaminated with a Church project.

And what about Bahrija? Are ther any Fresh water crabs left at Bahrija?
Why ask for advice and consultation when we already know the answer - MEPA ......... but wish
we didn't.

The best national environment policy, is the biodiversity specially befor every other issues there is... Air, Climate and Spring Water are the first three, Water must be protected it is the EU regulation that ground water must be clean not contaminated.
No living thing can survive with out water, as it allows us to live in an environment of fluctuatingit temperature.

how can the authority be believed in true consultations. I call MEPA 3 times a week, I have been trying for more than 4 weeks trying to contact the head of enforcment but never available. What is MEPA doing to really stop the illegal building in St Julians when it already issued a stop notice? Next week you will have a new floor.

As far as environment is concerned I have long lost much of my trust in almost all MPs but not in this one yet. I think what Dr De Marco does , does it from the heart and out of genuine concern that we touched the bottom in all areas enviornment, especially inview that he comes from the Blata Bajda Area so he must experience less than optimum air quality first hand so he must know what he is talking about . I hope that he will not give in to the pressures of other MPs to introduce much needed and robust policy direction in this sector ... and see it IMPLIMENTED .

one word of advise,,,, from what i see,,,,,,,, i not a consultant or anything..
before we look at the environment in general,,, the authorities need to :
STOP new buildings ( especially ODZs!! etc) and give HUGE incentives for regeneration of old/delapidated/ abandoned/ condemned buildings.
this also makes much sense in view of the GLUT of new but below standard buildings that have sprung up in the last 10 years in the ''craze'' period.
it is time to take our heads out of the sand. ( i mean the policy makers should ......)
cannot the authorities see this ENORMOUS amount of empty buildings?? do we not realise that the buidling that we bought at 100K lira will not sell? are we still dreaming that our property costs X amount because we had dreamt it??
