The Sagra Familja Centre, Cospicua, recently held a soiree in honour of Maurice Mizzi, chairman of the Spiru Mizzi Foundation Board, which funded the centre's Southern Comfort project. Mr Mizzi was accompanied by his colleagues Fr Hillary Tagliaferro and John Grech.

Cospicua archpriest Fr Joe Mifsud gave an overview of the activities carried out as part of the Southern Comfort project and emphasised the importance of parents understanding the benefits of these activities. He thanked the teachers and helpers who manage the project, as well as the sponsors.

Drama teacher Joseph Galea then gave an explanation of the positive effects of drama lessons on children, and 15-minute performance was given by a group of children.

Mr Mizzi then presented Fr Mifsud with a donation of €1,200 and delivered a speech. Launched last April, the Southern Comfort project offers a place for children living in the south of Malta to spend time after school. Teachers help them with their homework and attend to their academic needs. Drama lessons are held to encourage children to express themselves and improve their self-esteem.

The children are also taught IT and are occasionally taken on cultural outings.
