On June 15, I attended the National Conference on Elderly Abuse organised by a working committee from St Vincent de Paul Residence, which had organised a similar conference three years ago.

The conference was well-organised, on the whole. However, I feel it could be improved next time.

To begin with, there were too many speakers, so they did not have enough time to express themselves well.

Also, the time allowed for questions from the floor was very limited. For example, when the speakers on one of the panels finished their papers on various topics, only one question was allowed.

This concerned the law (enacted about 140 years ago) dealing with abuse of the elderly. Also, the time allocated for the table discussion was too short.

Nevertheless, I would like to congratulate the committee for raising much needed awareness on the issues which elderly citizens are facing today.
