Many of the 95,000 people aged over 60 choose to remain active in some way, according to Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly Mario Galea.

Thousands were renowned for their good work in various localities and Mr Galea invited the public, local councils and other organisations to nominate those they believed qualified to be named Elderly Person of the Year.

The prize is intended to serve as a general expression of gratitude for elderly people's contribution to society.

Nominations will be accepted until September 13 and the award-giving ceremony will take place at the President's Palace, Valletta, under the patronage of President George Abela on October 15.

Nomination forms can be obtained from the Ċentru Ħidma Soċjali, Sta Venera or the Department for the Elderly, Victoria.
