A married couple who lost €24,000 invested in the failed US bank Lehman Brothers are claiming they were "persuaded" by Bank of Valletta to make the investment against their will.

Michael Santucci and his wife Anna are now demanding their money back.

They claimed in a judicial protest they had wanted to invest in government shares but BOV representatives "insisted and persisted" they put the money into Lehman.

The couple said they had invested in the Lehman Brothers Perpetual Nominal at a rate of 5.125 per cent but the Lehman corporation had since filed for bankruptcy.

The advice given to them by BOV was erroneous and not in the best interest of its clients, they argued. As a direct result of the bank's actions, they had lost their money and continued to suffer damages to this day.

The judicial protest did not carry the date of the investment. Lehman filed for bankruptcy in September 2008 and the event is now often credited with being the spark for the ensuing global stock market collapse and financial crisis.

Lawyer Melvyn Mifsud signed the protest.
