Calleja concert being held on Thursday

The Joseph Calleja, Dionne Warwick and Riccardo Cocciante concert has been moved to Thursday at The Granaries in Floriana at 8.30 p.m.

The concert was postponed due to weather forecasts which predicted very strong winds, including the possibility of near gale force winds.

NNG Promotions apologised for the inconvenience and emphasised that the concert needed to be postponed to ensure that the thousands of guests attending the event would enjoy the best possible experience and performance from all the artists and orchestra.

Two concerts in two days! Wow what a week this will be! Moreover the headliners of these concerts will be Maltese artists!

Wintermoods are considered to be our local rock legends! For two decades Wintermoods have given us some of the best music this island have ever listened. The concert held on the Valletta Waterfront was simply amazing. I really cannot wait for next Wednesday's Concert

On the other hand our local Pavarotti, Joseph Calleja has the best voice I have ever heard. Alot of people Around the world have heard of Calleja's powerfull voice! We Maltese People should be very proud of him. As for the Concert, it was a wise thing to postpone it. Open air concert have these risks! Still I'm sure that Calleja is worth the risk and worth waiting for!

Pity the renzo piano open box is not ready.
This is an open lesson to our Prime minister to re consider in building our national opera house as it should be.
If persisting,it is going to be your downfall, because we opera lovers, and people who love to see our national culture are not going to forget this scandal of an open box that will haunt you forever.
Please re consider again ,and let the people choice prevail.
James A. Tyrrell(on 25/7/10)
So the concert will now be held on Thursday, unless of course the wind picks up again or it rains or there is excessive noise from birds or whatever.

What all the Government/Piano supporters here seem to overlook is the fact that successive Governments pre election have promised to re-build the bombed opera house, and have been doing so since the war ended. Now your Government are building themselves a new Parliament, which is not required and is going to be an ugly eyesore at a time when the country is trying to recover from the worst recession in recent history. And to keep you all happy you are being thrown the crumb of a roofless building designed by someone who obviously has no idea of the requirements of such a building in Malta.

No wonder the country is turning into the concrete jungle that it is.
Michelle Panzavecchia(on 25/7/10)
Joseph Calleja is the star of the show - Cocciante and Warwick are a bonus.... we should all be proud of our national gem who has a full schedule performing all over the world. He only performs here once a year because he is proud to be Maltese and wishes to transmit his passion for music to his compatriots, even passing on this love to our children. We should be thankful for that! This was truly a case of force majeure. The organisers could hardly have altered weather conditions!!! I feel that one cannot even begin to imagine the trouble NNG must have gone through to make sure that the concert would still be held with the same line up on an alternative day. So we should all appreciate the fact that this was an unfortunate case of unforseen circumstances. For those who cannot make the concert on Thursday just sell your tickets ... I am sure there are still people who have not booked since they could not make it on the 24th but would be delighted to attend on Thursday. On this island complaining about everything is simply the order of the day ... how sad!
Ruben Mallia(on 24/7/10)
I clearly remember reading somewhere that the organizers had an option for Sunday should the 24th be effected with bad weather. So why propose it, be aware of a possible weather condition months before and go back on your word?

If i'm not mistaken i also believe the organizers are the owners of the stage. So the responsibility should be more on them for not having an adequate stage to cater for wind conditions to ensure optimum sound qualities besides ensuring stage position on site.

I'm very disappointed in the way this was handled for 3 reasons :
1. the original line up with Baglioni was the main reason i had bought the tickets together with 10 people but we decided to still go ahead to support Calleja.
2. The organizers did not send us any information whatsoever.
3. We've heard that no refund will be given. This is ridiculous as we are not coming due to a farmhouse booked in Gozo next week together with 4 other couples who were all attending.

I've been to opera concerts abroad with wind conditions and we never had any problems.
Victor Laiviera(on 24/7/10)
I find it amusing that certain types automatically assume that any opposition to something proposed by the goverment is motivated by partisan feelings.

I take it as a strong indication that their own support (as we say in Maltese, kulħadd ikejjel b'xibru) is also motivated by partisan feelings.

I have no doubt that a large part of the approx 10 to 15% of the population that supports the Piano proposals do so purely because it was proposed by THEIR government and they do not want to be seen opposing it.
J. J. Borg(on 24/7/10)
Not really. Some of us just find your comments tedious and annoying.
Paul Vella(on 25/7/10)
@JJ Borg just as much as your beloved Government has annoyed us all with sagas like the White Rocks BWSC, Valletta's planned Gap Toothed Entance, Piano's Roofless Theatre and again Piano's Punch and Judy Clownish Parliament on Stilts. Not to mention exhorbitant energy bills and so on and so forth. But maybe all the blue goblins for whom whatever the Government does is right have a hidden sado masochistic which is expressed in their contributions (not blogs by the way).
P Micallef(on 24/7/10)
Cancelling the concert was a bad idea and a rush decision. The winds have already died down to an acceptable level for the concert to have gone ahead. I am sure that the organizers are regretting their decision which has disrupted the plans of many. Concerts of this level should not be cancelled unless there are very strong reasons. How many times have we seen large crowds in Hyde Park listening to Pavarotti and the three tenors under umbrellas?
Anthony Pace Gouder(on 24/7/10)

A PRIEVIEW of things to come with the INFAMOUS proposed RENZO PIANO "sort of" THEATRE at the Citygate gonzi-PROJECT !

@ Martin Spiteri - If I were you I would contact the Consumer Division in Santa Venera on Monday first thing.
Martin Spiteri(on 24/7/10)
I just hponed the indicated telephone number to get a refund since I absolutely cannot make it on the new date. Guess what? Only if you have proof of travel you MIGHT get a refund! what utter larceny this is! What if you have a wedding, an important event, work or anything that you cannot miss? Is this violation of our rights? Upon calling you are told, by an answering machine that you should read your rights on the back of the tickets! But you get your tickets AFTER you have parted with your cash (and cash it has to be since credit/debit card payments are not allowed) and not before! It is really a case where customer rights are trodden upon by these people who hide behind an anonymous organisation. Never again.
Joe Cassar(on 24/7/10)
Sue the organisers.
Leonard Cole (on 24/7/10)
We make a big deal out of nothing… Open air venue is a risk to natural elements, so taking into account the wind of today it was a right decision to cancel the concert and reschedule. In the past to see such concerts we had to travel abroad now over the last few years we get to see concerts locally without any additional expenses to travel. Even if we had the old theatre built would not have been possible to accommodate all public which would be watching Calleja’s concert on Thursday. So cheer up people and alter your arrangements to see Calleja’s concert on Thursday 29th..
Kevin Zammit(on 24/7/10)
Ah ... but this is just a sample. Is it not ironic that now for us to see Joseph Callejja performing a full opera we have to go abroad!
Jon Vercellono(on 26/7/10)
How do you know that you wouldn't be able to accomodate everyone in a newly rebuilt theatre? Are you a perit? Expert evidence has indicated that it can be done. Please refrain from inanity if you are not 100% sure of what you're saying.
david spiteri(on 24/7/10)
@L.Cutajar
tista dejjem tbiehhom il biljetti jekk ma tridx tmur , itffahom fuq Mpark , jiena ghadni irrid immur nixtri biljetti :)

An open air parliament would be an idea. Blow away the cobwebs.
Dr. David Pollina(on 24/7/10)
@Charles Sammut, simply BRILLIANT!! lol

Imagine how much nonsense we'd save whenever it would rain, or be too hot - that ought to keep them sedated for at least 2/3 of the year.

For the environment, it could be lit only by candlelight too...
Kevin Zammit(on 24/7/10)
Cocciante and Warwick are a bonus for me. I go to hear Joseph Callejja.
N. Lawrence(on 24/7/10)
Open air concert in the height of summer- good idea. Are you all sitting comfortably? Let the fire-works begin.
L. Cutajar(on 24/7/10)
Ghalkemm ftit rih zgur li ma kienx ser itellef mill-hoss tal-muzika tal-kuncert. Tal-misthija. Jien hallast ghall biljett biex nara lill Claudio Baglioni u ftit wara qalulna li dan mhux gej u minflok gej persuna ohra li qatt ma smajt bih u issa minflokk fil-gurnata li jien ippjanajt u stajt nattendi igifieri is-Sibt issa ser isir il-Hamis gurnata li jien inkun xoghol. dan mhux sew.
D. Grech(on 24/7/10)
Dear Mr.Cutajar,
Because you never heard of Riccardo Cocciante, does it mean that he's not a famous artist? haven,t you ever heard of the musicals Notre Dame de Paris and Romeo and Juliet? You must be a music expert.
B. Pollacco(on 24/7/10)
nies li ma jifmux zgur jghidu li mux se jaffetwa imma dawn huma nies li jifmu fdin l-settur u jafu li l-rih jamel differenza fil-hoss ukoll jista jinholoq periklu kemm l-kantatni,l-nies li se jattendu u t-tfal li se jkantaw. Regward Claudio Baglioni seta nqalalu xa haga li HADD(qas hu) kin jaf li se jigri dak n-nhar tal-kuncert.
L. Cutajar(on 25/7/10)
Tipprovawx tiehdu ir-ragun u t-tort lill min hallas biex jara kuncert. Jekk jien hallast ghall ornament tad-deheb taghtiniex wiehed tal-kartun. Jien xtrajt biljett ghax xtaqt nara lill Baglioni jkanta u l-gurnata li kien ser isir il-kuncert kienet tajba ghalijja. Int min int li issa tghidli li jien ma nifhimx fil-muzika u li t-temp kien tant hazin li ma setax isir il-kuncert? Dan il-kuncert seta sar taht xi tinda fejn ir-rih ma kienx ser jaffetwa f'xi lokalita ohra u fl-istess gurnata. Dak kien il-ftehim u dak li kien reklamat. Imma milli jidher l-ewwel il-flus u wara jaghtuna dak li jridu.
Carmel Saliba(on 24/7/10)
Please let us learn from our experience. We are in the hottest days of summer and the Calleja corcert was posponed due to the bad weather. Let the open theater planning in Valletta be revised?
stuart azzopardi(on 24/7/10)
Dear All, so finally the date is set again. However, for the peace of mind of all those who doubt the "buona fede" of the organisers, as a member of the choir team, I not only confirm that ALL the artists mentioned are present on the island, but also that last thursday at the MCC in Valletta, The orchestra, Mr Cocciante (who is present with his entourage) and Joseph thrilled us and the choir present with their voices and melodies.. The 500 strong choir joined in to complement an undescribable atmosphere. We are all prepared to show you what we've been preparing for in these past months.. And you will love it... That same eve, when persistant reports of gale force winds continued pouring in, I was also present on the granaries (as an friend and architect this time), whereby the organisers were dismantling whole sections of already prepared stage areas and designing wind breakers as to try and deliver.. however, besides acoustics effecting microphones there is also the health and safety of our 500 kids up there.. So the right decision HAS been taken, in everybody's interest. Hope you'll join us. We will deliver.
Edward Camilleri(on 24/7/10)
It just goes to show what a wise hurried decision was the decision to build the old theatre without a roof, against all advise. This is July and the event had to be cancelled, imagine an event being held Nov-Feb!

LOLLY DEBATTISTA(on 24/7/10)
Hope to get the refund , because I have another important appointment on ThursdaYU
Anthony A. Mifsud(on 24/7/10)
I hope I get refuned too as I will gone by Thursday, that €312.00 plus card commission.
I hope hat Maltaticket will reembourse!

Joe Grech(on 24/7/10)
I suppose this news bodes rather badly for our Prime Minister's plan to build a roofless theatre in Valletta. He should have also wet aside his irresponsible wish to build a Parliamentary building cum Offices on Freedom Square. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has dealt Valletta two serious blows with these ludicrous acts of his! Most people told him that but he was just too obstinate and aloof to heed peoples' views. Sad....
C. Bartolo(on 24/7/10)
Of course ... blame it on Gonzi and Piano.... Why is it that I am not surprised at this change in date and venue. I wonder whether the upcoming concerts by foreign stars would be postponed too!!! Overseas they still host concerts in windy conditions.. under heavy down pours... But the Maltese artists are special right?.
Jean-Pierre Aquilina(on 24/7/10)
Our dear Prime Minister and Architect Piano please take note.
A Grech(on 24/7/10)
With so many wise-guys on this island I cannot for the life of me understand why we have not been nominated & adjudicated for the mention of 'Centre for Extreme Unsurpassed Unparalleled Excellence within the Med' :-)

"Let's roof the Graneries" once we're at it!!!

To all those moaners...go fly your kites tonite and enjoy it! (That is unless YOU can control nature)

Victor Laiviera(on 24/7/10)
It is precisely because we "cannot control nature" that places like theatres and opera houses (surprise, surprise!) have a roof. So that the performance can go ahead in any weather.

If and when the monstrosity proposed instead of the old Opera House becomes a reality, such incidents will occur with monotonous regularity.,
Mario Scicluna(on 24/7/10)
Aw Grech..a simple roof would control nature ta
J Farrugia(on 24/7/10)
The granaries are an open area from all sides. The valletta theatre is an enclosed site. So the winds would not have made any difference. But as usual the maltese gemgem want to have their say. Malta does not need ANOTHER roofed theatre for the beugousiee..
A Grech(on 24/7/10)
Dear Victor...
I take it that you preferred the Magic Kiosk in St Anne's Square to the re-embelished square which saw it regain its original state, No matter what happens...you see RED. I see logic and common sense.
The theatre is a different topic...we all seem to want to say whats best and nothing gets done...We already have a closed theatre. personally I am for a retractable roof but unlike you, I don't shout black when its white. You should start to consider grey...
