Immigrant jailed for escaping, another charged with theft
An immigrant from Togo was yesterday jailed for four months after he admitted to leaving Malta with false documents.
Yousef Mohammed, 35, Togo, was returned to Malta after he was found in Italy.
Another immigrant, 25-year-old Said Hassan Mohammed, from Mogadishu, was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to snatching a handbag containing €100 from Rita Forace at City Gate in Valletta last Wednesday.

I feel so sorry for Malta. Such a peaceful nation living on a beautiful island is now being slowly destroyed by illegal mass immigration. I think that's not fair!! Wishing you luck with that guys!!!

it is easy for people to think with their emotions - or should that be prejudice? - and say that these immigrants are illegal because they arrive without a visa and should thus be repatriated .what they conveniently omit to mention is that maltese law also protects the right to seek asylum - even if a migrant has arrived illegally. if the government sends them back, it would be violating maltese law.
all other conjectures of social upheavel and economic considerations, besides being, at best, arguable on their merits, are irrelevant: it is the law which counts.

The critical thing here is where do these people get these false documents?
Obviously they are good enough to allow these guys to move illegally between countries, and this means criminals/fanatics/al Qaeda/bombers/nutter etc - can do the same.
The police must locate the sources of these false documents, and eliminate them, for our long term safety.

All I can say about these comments is that THIS is what goes against God. Not divorce, or things that have to do with sex. This is what the Church should be worried about!

The more I read comments from people such as I GALEA, STEVE DEMICOLI, CAMENZULI etc... the more I realise that our Maltese society has become a troglodyte one - and we are getting worse, not better. We are not developing as a nation, but we are going further down an abyss of hatred.
@ Charles Sammut: The majority is not always right and The Times poll is no proper indicator. And anyway, the country is going through a phase in which everyone is very angry and we are putting all fault in immigrants. I am not in favour of immigrants reaching our shores, but not to the detriment of putting their lives in danger.

Franco Farrugia, have you never heard of sleeping or sleeper cells? Here are a few links to help you understand what they are.

unbounded paranoia. Al Qaeda does not need to send its people of half sinking boats.

Sean Grima you are entitled to your opinion but don't day dream about Al Qaeda not doing it when they know that they are only a satellite phone call away from being taken to Malta.

Jail sentences is the only way to curb crimes of false documents and passports. Which put national and international security at risk. If the four or six month sentences don't work we have to start handing down a 12 month or multi year sentences.

Id rather see jailed those foreign politicians whom on one hand expect us to accept all immigrants coming to our shores and on the other hand they are ready to repatriate any immigrant who had been in Malta back to our island. No wonder why many EU countries have refused Maronis suggestion to set up an EU immigration center in Libya where immigrants can be streamed and send to Europe LEGALLY and SAFELY. We should pull out of the Dublin treaty who enforces such injustice towards both locals and immigrants.

yes, we should, after all, we don't care about human rights, do we?

I say "Deport the lot of them". Since they arrived at our shores, the crime rate has gone up; they have no respect for life or authority, and has caused Malta and the Maltese a great deal of a bad name with our neighbouring countries. These are not refugees (an excuse word to stay on these islands), they are all economical migrants to make a quick buck to send back home for a future confortable life. For the hospitality shown by the Maltese, what is Malta getting back in return ?
Sean Grima

crime rate gone up - really, which statistic backs that? all economic migrants - yes, except the majority of asylum seekers who are granted refugee status or temporary protection.

..poor people( from Togo) come to Malta without wanting to....
I for one did not pressure them.
Anybody did?
We fight our own wars here. They should do the same.

@ Franco Farrugia
A Togolese national who entered Malta illegally without documents and no basis for asylum has no business whatsoever staying in Europe. European countries do not want him on their soil. Whether he wanted to come to Malta or Italy is immaterial. The problem is that the Maltese government is not finding enough help to repatriate these people.
And as for the Somali bag snatcher is concerned, what do you recommend? A bunch of roses?

@ Farrugia
And since when is falsifying documents and leaving the island illegally not considered a crime.
Franco Farrugia
Jul 23rd 2010, 17:26
Then, treat crimes as punishable. But you should not have double standards. I hope that you have a tiny idea about what these people go through. Or have you become berefct of humanity and only have a heart for your family, friends and perhaps, acquaintances?!
Charles Sammut
Jul 23rd 2010, 17:59
@ Franco Farrugia
The poll on the right should give you an indication that the vast majority of people have had enough of this silent invasion. And yes, I do care more about my family, friends and country, that is why I am concerned. To do otherwise would be abandonment and betrayal of what we hold dear.
Steve Demicoli
Jul 23rd 2010, 18:43
@ Farrugia
You asked Mr Koludrovic whether he has "a tiny idea about what these people go through"
Could you tell us with any certainty? What have you WITNESSED them going through? What EVIDENCE have you got about what this particular illegal immigrant went through? in order to believe his story so blindly?
On the other hand, the court heard EVIDENCE of his falsifying documents and leaving the island illegally - i.e. without permission to visit the country where he was going?
Since when does one not need permission of the host country to enter that same country - just because of some ludicrous and exxagerated human rights loophole clause letting one claim 'asylum' in order to 'legalise' their ILLEGAL entry?
lgalea
Jul 23rd 2010, 20:30
Yes Franco Farrugia, we do care about our families and country much more than we would ever care about illegal immigrats. They are ILLEGAL and have absolutely NO right to come to Malta. This is our country not theirs.
Sean Grima
Jul 25th 2010, 13:46
as you all know very well, even if you arrive illegally in malta, you have a right to seek asylum and stay here until the application is decided. if you do not like that, it is your problem. the fact that 80% of some 2,000 something people does not like it is likewise irrelevant.
lgalea
Jul 25th 2010, 14:27
If the Prime Minister thinks that 80% of the poll is irrelevant he shall get his answer at election time.

Our country, through our judges, is further punishing these poor people who arrive in Malta without wanting to. For God's sake, when will this stop? Sending immigrants to jail because they tried escaping the country. And then, within the same courts, we have a man who terrorised his family and he is sentenced in a ridiculous manner! Where is justice????

Jul 23rd 2010, 17:32
@Mr Farrugia Why was this illegal immigrant sent back to Malta? He's not maltese. The poor people who are being punished are us maltese. These immigrants are a big burden on our country, by using our resources for free off the maltese taxpayer. You sound that the ones we have in prison, are only there, cos they tried to escape to another country. Well i suggest you Mr Farrugia, to make a find out why many of them are in jail. For sure you will change your mind.
