PM joins schoolchildren on fortifications tour
The prime minister this morning joined primary school children who were taken on a harbour tour aimed at helping them appreciate the bastions.
The government last year launched a €36 million project to restore the bastions around Grand Harbour, Mdina and the Cittadella in Gozo.
The Skola Sajf students were given a quick lesson in history by a teacher who spoke about the Order of St John and how they had ringed their important towns with fortifications.
Resources Minister George Pullicino, whose ministry is carrying out the restoration project, said that smaller areas in Valletta were being restored with local funds, including the old warehouses at Biaggio Steps.

Not all the children attending 2 and 3 year primary in state school were given the opportunity to attend summer school / summer club 2010.

I do not wish to repeat myself but reader's comments below warrant this final clarification. The children taking part in this event attent Kidstart Summer Club in Mriehel, an educational programme organised each year by Vista Coop. This is a private initiative and has nothing to do with the state-run Skola Sajf. We do not have a Mr Jacobs Smith on our staff and have no idea who he may be.
Finally, we hope that the rapportage on tomorrow's printed edition of the Times of Malta will be correct and not repeat the imprecision of the online report, given the clarifications made. Facts are easily verified with the Office of the Prime Minister and/or Kidstart.

I would like to augur the organizers and promoters of this fantastic tour particularly those involved in Skola Sajf and Mr. Jacobs Smith (cordinator) for their laborious effort to promote our cultural heritage. Definetely, this was a great event but not without the tremondous effort of all concerned to see that everything goes as it was planned. Thanks again and hope that other events such as these will also be organized in the future. My son really enjoyed it.

Nixtieq li kieku xi hadd jghidilna x'se jaghmel il-gvern dwar il-fortizza tas-salvatur fil-Kalkara. Din il-Gvern laborista kien innegozja ma membri tal-familja MINTOFF u wara li uzawa biex jaghmlu l-planki tal-konkos u ghamlu disastru minnha issa tinsab abbandunata. Xi hadd qalli li kienu saru attentati sabiex din terga tinbiegh lil gvern jew inkella lil privat. Meta hekk sewwa tinxtara bi ftit elef ta liri u issa jridu mijiet ta eluf ghaliha. Ftit ilu qrajt li l-partit nazzjonalista ghandu rabta importanti ma din il-fortizza ghax fi zmien il-gwerra diversi nies min tieghu inklus il-Prim Ministru Nerik Mizzi kien internat f'dan il-post qabel haduh l-Uganda. Nispera li din il-fortizza tigi irrangata gġal glorja taghha. Il-Gvern jista jekk irrid isib nezz kif jiehu din il-fortizza lura. Jekk hemm bzonn isir. Barra din il-postijiet storici kollha ghandu johodhom lura il-gvern.

@Rosette Thake
You are definetely wrong and imprecise. This was part of the Skola Sajf administered and wholly organized by our coordinator Mr. Jacobs Smith. Thanks to our team who managed to make this superb tour around the Maltese fortifications.

Mr Bellizzi I would like to confirm what my colleague Ms Thake commented as clarification. ONLY kids attending Kidstart Summer Club were invited to attend the fortification tour....no other kids from any where else were on the boat.

Did anyone tell the Hon. Prime Minister that Fort St Angelo is in limbo by night? Many floodlights meant to illuminate the bastions and facades of the historical buildings are not working thus leaving this architectural gem in darkness. As a result, its magnificence and beauty cannot be appreciated. The irony is that it only takes a little bit of pride, interest and an even lesser degree of committment by all the ministers and parliamentary secretaries towards the proper management of this island to sort things out. But i guess they are only interested in photo ops!
The neglect and disregard being shown to this gem is outright shameful!

Admittedly a lot of work is being done in the restoration of the bastions but what is going on in fort St. Angelo? An update, if any, on the repairs and restoration inside the fort should be made public. Setting up some scaffolding against the cavalier is not enough to convince the caring public that work is going on. We have a right to know what's happening to our heritage.
