A 35-year-old man from St Paul's Bay admitted in court today to having been involved in the theft of gold items from eight jewellery shops in order to fund his drug habit.

Ivan Camilleri was accused of having stolen items from Esquisite Jewellery in Ta' Qali, Super Gold in Bay Street, Sterling Jewellers in Valletta and Paola, S Debono Jewellers and Ray's Jewellers of Fgura, Solid Gold in Sliema and Classic Jewellers, Bugibba.

His haul was estimated to amount to €3,600. The thefts took place last month.

The accused said he was prepared to pay back the value of his haul by instalments.

Mr Camilleri was granted bail on probation. Sentencing was set for September 30.
