Max Ciantar, a driver who allegedly hit twin sisters in a hit and run incident in Attard on April 28 was granted €1,000 in compensation today after a court found that his human rights were breached when a court had granted him bail but ordered him to stay at Mt Carmel Hospital.

The defence counsel, Dr Joe Brincat, had argued that once his client had to pay €3,000 for his bail and a personal guarantee of €20,000, his confinement to Mr Carmel was not justified.

Mr Justice Joseph R. Micallef said the application for bail would be reconsidered by the criminal court, but he ordered the Attorney General to pay Mr Ciantar €1,000 in moral damages.
