A call for nominations for the Elderly of the Year Award 2010 was issued today by Parliamentary Secretary Mario Galea, who said that although the award was presented to only one person, it was recognition of the good work done by thousands of elderly people.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr Galea said he wished to thank the thousands of elderly people who continued to contribute to society after retirement, with many of them engaged in voluntary work.

This award, he said, served to focus attention to the work which this elderly people were putting in.

There are over 95,000 persons aged over 60 in Malta and Gozo.

Nominations will be received up to September 13 and the winner will be announced at a ceremony at the Palace on October 15.
