On the presentation of the Private Member's Bill on divorce, there was a quotation from Pope Bendict XVI. It would have been more appropriate had the following quotations from the Pope's speeches in Malta were also included:

1. "Your nation should continue to stand up for the indissolubility of marriage as a natural institution as well as a sacramental one, and for the true nature of the family."

2. "You should be proud that your country both defends the unborn and promotes stable family life by saying no to abortion and divorce," he added. "I urge you to maintain this courageous witness to the sanctity of life and the centrality of marriage and family life for a healthy society."

3. "Since (the arrival of St Paul in Malta), a fervent Christian community was born that after 2,000 years is still faithful to the Gospel and strives to combine it with the complex issues of our time... This course is not always easy or obvious, but the Maltese people can find in the Christian vision of life responses to new challenges. (You) have kept a deep respect for unborn life and the sanctity of marriage, choosing not to introduce abortion and divorce under the law of the country."
